Costco Stock Surges on Strong Earnings, Growth

Costco Stock Hits All-Time High Amid Strong Quarterly Earnings and Membership Growth

ISSAQUAH, WA — Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST) saw its stock surge to a record high Thursday after reporting better-than-expected quarterly earnings and continued growth in membership renewals. Shares climbed nearly 8% in early trading, reaching an all-time peak of $985.50 before settling at $978.20 by market close.

The big-box retailer reported fiscal Q3 revenue of $62.3 billion, up 12% year-over-year, surpassing analyst estimates of $60.8 billion. Net income rose to $1.9 billion, or $4.25 per share, compared to $1.6 billion ($3.58 per share) in the same period last year.

Key drivers of the strong performance included:

Membership Renewals: Costco’s membership renewal rate remained at a stellar 93% in the U.S. and Canada, with global paid memberships surpassing 75 million.

E-Commerce Growth: Online sales jumped 18%, fueled by same-day grocery delivery and an expanded selection of high-demand items.

International Expansion: New warehouse openings in China and Japan contributed to a 15% increase in international sales.

'Costco continues to demonstrate why it’s a standout in the retail sector,' said Morgan Stanley retail analyst Simeon Gutman. 'Their ability to maintain high margins while keeping prices competitive is a winning formula.'

The company also announced a special dividend of $15 per share, rewarding long-term investors. This follows Costco’s history of periodic special payouts, the last being $10 per share in late 2023.

Despite broader market volatility, Costco’s stock has gained over 30% in the past year, outperforming rivals like Walmart and Target. Some analysts suggest COST could soon join the elite $1,000-per-share club, a milestone currently held by only a handful of companies.

'We remain bullish on Costco’s model,' said JPMorgan’s Christopher Horvers. 'Their loyal customer base and disciplined expansion strategy position them well for sustained growth.'

Investors will be watching closely for updates on potential membership fee increases—a move that has historically boosted revenue without significant member attrition.
