Local Hero Mike Peters Saves Stranded Hikers in Dramatic Mountain Rescue

Asbury Park, NJ – April 29, 2025

In a heart-stopping rescue mission yesterday, local firefighter and volunteer search-and-rescue specialist Mike Peters braved treacherous conditions to save three hikers stranded on the steep cliffs of Mount Watatic.

The hikers, a family of three from Boston, had set out for a day hike but lost their way after fog rolled in unexpectedly. With temperatures dropping and daylight fading, authorities were alerted when the family’s distress call was picked up by park rangers.

Mike Peters, a 15-year veteran of the Asbury Park Fire Department and an experienced mountaineer, was among the first responders to join the search. Using night-vision equipment and ropes, Peters scaled a near-vertical rock face to reach the stranded group, who were huddled on a narrow ledge.

'I just kept thinking, ‘We’ve got to get to them before hypothermia sets in,’' Peters said afterward. 'The wind was brutal, but we couldn’t afford to wait.'

After securing the hikers with harnesses, Peters and his team carefully lowered them to safety. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured.

'Mike’s quick thinking and skill saved our lives,' said grateful hiker Daniel Carter. 'We can’t thank him enough.'

Peters, ever humble, shrugged off the praise. 'Just doing my job,' he said. 'But I’m glad everyone’s safe.'

Local officials are now urging hikers to check weather forecasts and carry emergency gear before heading into the wilderness. Meanwhile, Mike Peters is back on duty—ready for whatever comes next.
