Liberal Minority Government, Bloc Surges in Election

BREAKING NEWS: LIBERALS WIN MINORITY GOVERNMENT AS BLOC QUEBECOIS MAKES GAINS IN TIGHT ELECTION RACE

Ottawa, October 21, 2024 – Elections Canada has released the final results of the 2024 federal election, with the Liberal Party securing a minority government while the Bloc Québécois surged in Quebec, reshaping the political landscape.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will remain in office, but his Liberals fell short of a majority, winning 158 seats—12 shy of the 170 needed for full control. The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, captured 125 seats, maintaining a strong opposition presence.

The biggest surprise of the night was the Bloc Québécois, which gained 38 seats—up from 32 in the last election—solidifying its hold over Quebec. Leader Yves-François Blanchet declared the results a victory for Quebec’s interests, stating, 'Canadians may have chosen Trudeau, but Quebec has chosen to speak with a stronger voice in Ottawa.'

The New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh, won 22 seats, down slightly from its previous tally. Singh acknowledged the challenges but vowed to push for progressive policies in Parliament. Meanwhile, the Green Party secured 2 seats, with leader Elizabeth May retaining her riding in British Columbia.

Voter turnout was 67%, slightly higher than in 2021, with Elections Canada reporting smooth operations despite some delays in urban ridings due to high advance voting numbers.

Trudeau, addressing supporters in Montreal, struck a conciliatory tone, saying, 'Canadians have given us a mandate to govern, but also a reminder to work together. We will seek common ground with all parties to deliver results.'

Political analysts suggest the Liberals may rely on NDP support to pass key legislation, while the strengthened Bloc could play a pivotal role in debates over Quebec autonomy and federal policies.
