The Ghost Runner of the Pittsburgh Marathon

Every year, thousands of runners gather in Pittsburgh to take on the challenging yet scenic course of the Pittsburgh Marathon. The route winds through downtown, across bridges, past cheering crowds in the Strip District, and up the brutal hills of Oakland before finishing in Point State Park. But there’s one runner who never crosses the finish line—a legend known only as The Ghost Runner.

The First Sighting

In 2010, a veteran marathoner named Lisa Ramirez was pacing strongly through the North Side when she noticed a man in an old-fashioned running outfit—a faded 1980s tracksuit and a headband—keeping perfect stride with her. He didn’t look tired, didn’t take water, and when she tried to speak to him, he just smiled and whispered, 'Keep going. You’re almost there.'

Then, as they turned onto the 16th Street Bridge, he vanished.

The Legend Grows

Over the years, more runners claimed to see him. He appeared at different points on the course—sometimes struggling up the hill near the Cathedral of Learning, other times gliding effortlessly along the Allegheny River. He never wore a bib, never showed up in race photos, and disappeared if anyone tried to follow him.

Some say he was a runner from the very first Pittsburgh Marathon in 1985 who never finished his race. Others believe he’s the spirit of a steelworker who once ran these streets every morning before his shift. Whatever the truth, his presence is seen as a good omen—those who spot him always finish strong.

The Final Mile

In 2023, a first-time marathoner named Jake was ready to quit at Mile 23, his legs burning. That’s when the Ghost Runner appeared beside him, matching his pace.

'One step at a time,' the ghost said. 'The city is cheering for you.'

Jake pushed through the pain and finished with a personal best. When he turned to thank the stranger, he was gone—only a faint breeze drifting toward the Point State Park fountain.

Now, runners keep an eye out for him, especially when the race gets tough. Because in Pittsburgh, even the ghosts love a good marathon.
