Georgetown Basketball Hires New Head Coach in Effort to Revitalize Program

Washington, D.C. – April 1, 2025

Georgetown University has announced the hiring of a new head coach for its storied men’s basketball program, marking a pivotal moment in the team’s quest to return to national prominence. After several disappointing seasons, the Hoyas are looking to reclaim their place among college basketball’s elite.

The university confirmed today that Coach Mark Prosser, former head coach at Western Carolina and a rising star in the coaching ranks, will take over the program. Prosser, 45, brings a reputation for player development and an up-tempo offensive style, which fans hope will reinvigorate Georgetown’s play.

'This is a tremendous opportunity to lead one of the most historic programs in college basketball,' Prosser said at a press conference. 'Georgetown has a championship legacy, and I’m committed to restoring that winning tradition.'

Georgetown basketball, once a powerhouse under legendary coaches like John Thompson Jr. and his son John Thompson III, has struggled in recent years. The Hoyas last made the NCAA Tournament in 2021 under former coach Patrick Ewing but have since failed to post a winning record in the competitive Big East Conference.

Athletic Director Lee Reed expressed confidence in Prosser’s ability to turn the program around. 'Coach Prosser has a proven track record of building successful teams, and his energy and vision align perfectly with Georgetown’s values,' Reed said.

Fans and alumni are cautiously optimistic about the hire. 'We need fresh leadership,' said longtime supporter Marcus Johnson. 'The Big East is tougher than ever, but Georgetown belongs at the top.'

Prosser’s first major task will be retaining key players and securing recruits ahead of the 2025-26 season. With the transfer portal playing a larger role in college sports, his ability to attract talent will be crucial.

As the Hoyas prepare for a new era, the pressure is on to restore the glory days of Georgetown basketball—a challenge Prosser is eager to embrace.
