Funeral Director Honored for Lifelong Service

Local Funeral Director Honored for Decades of Compassionate Service

Springfield, May 12, 2025 — For over 40 years, Harold Jenkins has been a comforting presence for grieving families in Springfield, guiding them through their most difficult moments with kindness and professionalism. Today, the community came together to honor Jenkins, the longtime director of Evergreen Funeral Home, for his decades of dedicated service.

A surprise ceremony was held at Springfield City Hall, where Mayor Linda Carter presented Jenkins with a key to the city. 'Harold has touched countless lives with his empathy and unwavering commitment to helping families say goodbye to their loved ones with dignity,' Mayor Carter said. 'He is more than a funeral director—he is a pillar of our community.'

Jenkins, 68, began his career in the funeral industry at age 22, taking over his family’s business after his father’s retirement. Over the years, he has adapted to changing traditions, offering personalized services that celebrate life rather than just mourn loss. From organizing motorcycle processions for veterans to arranging eco-friendly green burials, Jenkins has worked tirelessly to meet the needs of every family.

'I never saw this as just a job,' Jenkins told the crowd, visibly moved. 'It’s been an honor to walk alongside people in their darkest hours and help them find a way forward.'

In addition to his funeral home duties, Jenkins has volunteered with local grief support groups and organized annual memorial services for families who have lost children. His impact was evident as dozens of attendees—many of them former clients—shared heartfelt stories of his compassion.

As Jenkins prepares to retire later this year, his legacy of kindness and professionalism will live on through his son, Daniel, who will take over the family business. 'I’ve learned from the best,' Daniel said. 'And I’ll do my best to continue serving this community with the same care my father always has.'

For now, Harold Jenkins says he’s looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren—though he admits he’ll still stop by the funeral home now and then. 'Old habits die hard,' he joked.
