Florida Names Todd Golden New Basketball Coach

Florida Hires Todd Golden as New Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Gainesville, FL – March 18, 2024

The University of Florida has officially named Todd Golden as the new head coach of its men’s basketball program, the school announced Friday. Golden, 38, arrives in Gainesville after a successful three-year stint at the University of San Francisco, where he led the Dons to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998.

Golden replaces Mike White, who left Florida after seven seasons to take the head coaching job at the University of Georgia. Florida Athletic Director Scott Stricklin praised Golden’s innovative approach and track record of success.

'Todd is one of the brightest young minds in college basketball,' Stricklin said. 'His ability to develop players, embrace analytics, and build a winning culture made him the perfect fit for the Gators.'

At San Francisco, Golden compiled a 57-36 record, including a 24-10 season in 2021-22 that ended with a thrilling near-upset of Murray State in the NCAA Tournament. Known for his modern offensive schemes and emphasis on three-point shooting, Golden has drawn comparisons to other analytically driven coaches like Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.

Before his time at USF, Golden served as an assistant at Auburn under Bruce Pearl, helping guide the Tigers to the 2019 Final Four. A former standout point guard at Saint Mary’s College, Golden brings both playing and coaching experience to a Florida program looking to return to national prominence.

'I’m honored to lead one of the premier programs in college basketball,' Golden said in a statement. 'The University of Florida has incredible resources, passionate fans, and a commitment to excellence. I can’t wait to get to work.'

Golden’s hiring signals a new era for Florida basketball, which last reached the Final Four in 2014 under Billy Donovan. The Gators finished 20-14 this past season, narrowly missing the NCAA Tournament.

Terms of Golden’s contract were not immediately disclosed, but reports indicate a five-year deal worth approximately $3 million annually. His first major task will be assembling a coaching staff and retaining key players amid the transfer portal era.

Florida fans will get their first glimpse of the Todd Golden era this fall as the Gators prepare for the 2024-25 season.
