Houston Cougars Head Coach Kelvin Sampson Named Naismith Coach of the Year After Historic Season

Houston, TX – April 8, 2025 – In a resounding acknowledgment of his leadership and coaching excellence, University of Houston men’s basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson has been awarded the 2025 Naismith College Coach of the Year, capping off a remarkable season for the Cougars.

Under Sampson’s guidance, Houston finished the regular season with a 32-3 record, securing the No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll for multiple weeks and clinching the Big 12 Conference Championship in only their second year in the league. The Cougars also earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, making a deep run to the Final Four before narrowly falling to the eventual national champions in a thrilling overtime battle.

Known for his defensive-minded approach and player development, Sampson has transformed Houston into a perennial powerhouse since taking over in 2014. This marks his second Naismith Coach of the Year honor, having previously won it in 2022.

'This award isn’t about me—it’s about our players, staff, and the incredible support from Cougar Nation,' Sampson said in a statement. 'We’ve built something special here, and the best is yet to come.'

With multiple top recruits joining next season, Houston is already a favorite to contend for the 2026 national title. Athletic director Chris Pezman praised Sampson, calling him 'one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history.'
