Florida Basketball Coach Fired After Disappointing Season

Gainesville, FL – April 8, 2025 – The University of Florida has announced the dismissal of men's basketball head coach John Thompson following a lackluster season that saw the Gators miss the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.

Athletic Director Scott Stricklin confirmed the decision in a press conference Monday morning, stating, 'After a thorough evaluation, we believe a change in leadership is necessary to return our program to national prominence.'

Thompson, who took over in 2022, led the Gators to a 17-15 record this season, finishing ninth in the SEC. Despite early promise with a top-10 recruiting class last year, the team struggled with consistency, including key losses to rivals Kentucky and Tennessee.

Fans expressed mixed reactions, with some calling for patience while others demanded immediate improvement. 'We deserve better,' said longtime booster Mark Reynolds. 'Florida basketball should be competing for championships, not bubble bids.'

A national search for Thompson’s replacement is already underway, with early speculation focusing on high-profile mid-major coaches and former NBA assistants.

Thompson released a statement thanking the university and players, saying, 'I’m proud of what we built here, and I believe this team has a bright future.'
