NCAA Softball Tournament 2025: The Cinderella Story of the Century

The 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament was already shaping up to be one of the most competitive in history, with powerhouse teams like Oklahoma, UCLA, and Florida State dominating the regular season. But no one could have predicted the unbelievable underdog story that would unfold.

The Rise of the Little Giants

Enter the Eastern Washington Eagles, a small program from the Big Sky Conference that had never even made it past the regional round. Coached by the fiery and determined Maggie Rivera, the Eagles scraped into the tournament as the very last at-large bid—ranked 64th out of 64 teams. Most analysts dismissed them as a mere warm-up for the top seeds.

But the Eagles had other plans.

Led by Ace Pitcher Sarah 'The Wall' Gutierrez, a sophomore transfer with a devastating rise ball, and Freshman Phenom Emma 'Lightning' Reyes, a leadoff hitter with blazing speed, Eastern Washington shocked the softball world by upsetting #1 seed Oklahoma in the Super Regionals. Gutierrez outdueled Sooners’ star pitcher Jordan Matthews in a 10-inning thriller, and Reyes stole home for the winning run.

The Road to the Championship

The Eagles’ magical run continued in Oklahoma City at the Women’s College World Series. They knocked off defending champion UCLA in a 12-11 slugfest, survived a walk-off homer by Florida State’s slugger Avery Clark, and then faced SEC powerhouse Tennessee in the finals.

The best-of-three championship series was an instant classic. After dropping Game 1 in extra innings, the Eagles rallied back in Game 2 with a game-saving diving catch by center fielder Jasmine Lee. That set up a winner-take-all Game 3—a showdown for the ages.

The Final Inning

With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th, Tennessee loaded the bases with one out. Gutierrez, pitching on fumes, dug deep and struck out the next two batters to force extra innings.

In the top of the 8th, Reyes slapped a single, stole second, and then dashed home on a wild pitch to take the lead. Gutierrez returned to the circle, and with two outs and the tying run on third, she unleashed her signature rise ball one last time—freezing the batter for strike three.

Eastern Washington had done the impossible.

A Tournament for the Ages

The Eagles became the lowest-seeded team ever to win the NCAA Softball Championship, completing one of the greatest Cinderella runs in sports history. Coach Rivera was carried off the field, Gutierrez was named Most Outstanding Player, and the small school from Cheney, Washington, became a household name.

As the confetti fell, ESPN’s commentators declared: 'This wasn’t just a tournament—it was a fairy tale.'

And for the 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament, that was the perfect ending.
