Catholic University Secures Dramatic Victory Over Barcelona SC in Thrilling Encounter

In a match filled with tension and late drama, Universidad Católica delivered a stunning performance to defeat Barcelona SC 2-1 at the Estadio Banco Pichincha on Sunday night. The victory keeps Católica’s playoff hopes alive while dealing a blow to Barcelona’s title aspirations in the Ecuadorian Serie A.

First Half: Barcelona Dominates but Fails to Convert

Barcelona SC started strong, controlling possession and creating several early chances. Argentine striker Francisco Fydriszewski came close in the 15th minute, forcing a sharp save from Católica goalkeeper Jorge Pinos. The pressure paid off in the 32nd minute when Damián Díaz, Barcelona’s veteran playmaker, delivered a pinpoint cross to Fydriszewski, who headed home to give the Toreros a 1-0 lead.

Despite Barcelona’s dominance, Católica grew into the game before halftime, with Ismael Díaz and Jhonny Quiñónez testing Barcelona keeper Javier Burrai.

The momentum shifted entirely in Católica’s favor, and in the 83rd minute, substitute Andrade completed the comeback with a brilliant solo effort, cutting inside and curling a left-footed shot into the far corner.

Barcelona pushed desperately for an equalizer, with Carlos Garcés hitting the crossbar in stoppage time. Tempers flared in the dying moments as Díaz was shown a red card for a reckless challenge, leaving Barcelona with 10 men.
