Rep. Gerry Connolly Advocates for Climate Action and Infrastructure Reform in Latest Congressional Address

Washington, D.C. – May 22, 2024 – U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly (D-VA) delivered a passionate speech on the House floor yesterday, urging bipartisan cooperation to address climate change and modernize the nation’s aging infrastructure. The Virginia Democrat, a long-time advocate for environmental sustainability and government accountability, emphasized the urgent need for legislative action.

'The climate crisis is not a distant threat—it’s here, and it’s impacting our communities now,' Connolly stated, citing recent extreme weather events and rising sea levels affecting coastal regions, including parts of his Northern Virginia district. He called for increased funding for renewable energy projects and criticized efforts to roll back environmental protections.

Connolly, who serves as the Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Government Operations, also highlighted the importance of upgrading America’s infrastructure. 'From crumbling roads to outdated public transit, our failure to invest in infrastructure is holding back our economy,' he said. His remarks come as Congress debates a new bipartisan infrastructure bill aimed at revitalizing transportation networks and expanding broadband access.

A vocal supporter of government efficiency, Connolly additionally pushed for reforms to federal procurement processes, arguing that outdated systems waste taxpayer dollars. His proposed legislation, the Modernizing Government Technology Act, seeks to streamline IT upgrades across agencies.

Political analysts suggest Connolly’s focus on climate and infrastructure aligns with Democratic priorities ahead of the 2024 elections. Meanwhile, Republicans have expressed willingness to collaborate on infrastructure but remain divided on climate-related spending.

Connolly, first elected in 2008, represents Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, which includes Fairfax County and parts of Prince William County. Known for his expertise in federal workforce issues and environmental policy, he remains a key figure in Democratic policy discussions.

As debates continue, Connolly’s office confirmed he will host a town hall next week to gather constituent feedback on these issues.
