Columbus Day Replaced by Indigenous Peoples' Day

Columbus Day Renamed to Indigenous Peoples' Day in Major U.S. Cities Amid Growing Controversy

In a landmark decision, several major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle, and Denver, have officially replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day in their municipal calendars. The move comes after years of debate over the legacy of Christopher Columbus and his role in the colonization of the Americas, which many argue led to the suffering and displacement of Native peoples.

'This change honors the resilience and contributions of Indigenous communities, rather than celebrating a figure tied to violence and exploitation,' said Seattle Mayor Priya Patel at a signing ceremony attended by tribal leaders.

The shift reflects a broader national trend, with over 20 states now recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day either alongside or instead of Columbus Day. However, the decision has faced pushback from some Italian-American groups, who view Columbus as a symbol of their heritage.

'Columbus Day has long been a point of pride for Italian-Americans,' said Marco Ferraro, president of the Italian Cultural Society of New York. 'We support education about history’s complexities, but erasing the holiday entirely feels like an affront to our community.'

Meanwhile, the White House issued a proclamation acknowledging both perspectives, recognizing Columbus Day as a federal holiday while also celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day—a compromise that has drawn mixed reactions.

As statues of Columbus continue to be removed or relocated across the country, the debate over how America commemorates its history shows no signs of fading.
