College Board Unveils Digital SAT Overhaul

College Board Announces Major Overhaul to SAT Exam: Digital-Only and Shorter Test Starting 2025

New York, NY — June 10, 2024 — The College Board, the nonprofit organization responsible for the SAT and Advanced Placement (AP) programs, has unveiled sweeping changes to its flagship college admissions exam. Beginning in 2025, the SAT will transition to a fully digital format and will be shortened from three hours to just two, marking one of the most significant revisions in the test’s nearly 100-year history.

Key Changes to the SAT

Fully Digital Testing: Students will take the exam on laptops or tablets at approved testing centers, though in-person proctoring will remain.

Shorter Duration: The test will now last two hours instead of three, with more concise reading passages and fewer math questions.

Adaptive Testing: The digital SAT will adjust question difficulty in real-time based on student performance, a feature already used in the GRE and other exams.

Faster Results: Scores will be delivered in days rather than weeks.

Why the Change?

College Board CEO David Coleman stated that the updates are designed to reduce student stress and keep pace with the evolving educational landscape. 'The digital SAT will be easier to take, easier to administer, and more relevant to today’s students,' he said in a press conference.

The move comes amid declining SAT participation rates, as more colleges adopt test-optional policies. However, some elite universities, including MIT and Georgetown, recently reinstated SAT/ACT requirements, arguing that standardized tests help identify high-achieving students from under-resourced schools.

Mixed Reactions

Educators and students have expressed mixed feelings. Supporters praise the streamlined format, while critics worry about digital equity. 'Not all students have reliable laptops or internet access,' said Marta García, a high school counselor in Chicago. 'This could widen the gap for low-income test-takers.'

The College Board has pledged to provide devices for students in need and will offer free practice materials through Khan Academy, its longtime partner.

What’s Next?

A pilot program for the digital SAT will launch this fall in select U.S. high schools, with full implementation expected by spring 2025. The PSAT will also transition to digital in October 2024.

As debates over standardized testing continue, one thing is clear: the College Board is betting big on a digital future.
