Athletic Bilbao Secures Historic Victory Over Barcelona to Claim Copa del Rey Title

Bilbao, Spain – April 18, 2025

In a stunning display of determination and teamwork, Athletic Bilbao lifted the Copa del Rey trophy for the first time in over four decades after a thrilling 2-1 victory over FC Barcelona at La Cartuja Stadium in Seville.

The Basque side, known for their unique policy of fielding only players from the Basque Country or its surrounding regions, delivered a masterclass in tactical discipline and attacking flair. The match was decided in extra time after a hard-fought 90 minutes ended 1-1, with Bilbao’s rising star, Nico Williams, scoring the dramatic winner in the 112th minute.

Barcelona, who had been heavy favorites, took an early lead through Robert Lewandowski’s clinical finish in the 25th minute. However, Bilbao responded just before halftime as veteran captain Iker Muniain converted a penalty after a handball in the box. The second half saw both teams create chances, but it was Williams who became the hero, latching onto a pinpoint cross from his brother, Iñaki Williams, to head home the decisive goal.

Emotional scenes followed as thousands of Bilbao fans celebrated wildly in the stands. Manager Marcelino García Toral, who led the team to Supercopa de España glory in 2021, praised his players for their resilience.

'This is a victory for our philosophy, our fans, and the identity of this club,' Marcelino said. 'These players have shown the world what it means to wear the Athletic shirt.'

The victory marks Bilbao’s 24th Copa del Rey title, further cementing their status as one of Spain’s most successful clubs in the competition. With a place in next season’s Europa League secured, the Lions now turn their attention to securing a top-four finish in La Liga.

For Barcelona, the defeat adds to a turbulent season, raising further questions about manager Xavi Hernández’s future. Meanwhile, Bilbao’s triumph has reignited pride across the Basque Country, proving once again that their unique approach to football can still compete with the giants of the game.
