Vatican Announces Cardinal Robert Prevost to Lead Major Reform of Diocese Structures

Rome, May 2, 2025 – In a significant move aimed at modernizing the Catholic Church’s administrative framework, Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Robert Prevost, O.S.A., to oversee a sweeping reform of diocese structures worldwide. The initiative, dubbed 'Renewing the Shepherds' Mission,' seeks to address declining parish participation, financial transparency, and clergy distribution in underserved regions.

Cardinal Prevost, who currently serves as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, brings decades of pastoral and managerial experience to the task. Having previously served as a missionary in Peru and later as a bishop in Chiclayo, his deep understanding of both local and global church challenges makes him a pivotal figure in this effort.

Key Reforms on the Horizon

The proposed changes include:

Regional Synodal Collaboration: Encouraging dioceses to share resources and clergy to combat priest shortages.

Enhanced Lay Leadership: Expanding roles for non-ordained members in parish administration.

Financial Accountability Protocols: Implementing standardized audits to prevent misuse of funds.

Reactions from the Faithful

While some traditionalists have expressed concern over rapid changes, many bishops have welcomed the reforms. 'Cardinal Prevost listens before he acts—that’s why this could work,' said Archbishop José Gómez of Los Angeles.

The Vatican expects the first phase of reforms to begin in late 2025, with a full review planned by 2028. For now, all eyes are on Cardinal Prevost as he undertakes one of the most ambitious church restructuring efforts in recent history.
