Local Hero Brian Gregory Saves Stranded Hikers in Dramatic Mountain Rescue

Asheville, NC – In a heart-pounding rescue mission yesterday, local outdoorsman and volunteer firefighter Brian Gregory braved treacherous conditions to save two hikers stranded on Mount Mitchell.

The hikers, identified as 24-year-old Sarah Lin and 28-year-old Mark Dobson, had set out early Tuesday morning but lost their way after heavy fog rolled in. By nightfall, temperatures dropped dangerously low, and the pair called 911 after realizing they were trapped on a steep ridge.

Gregory, a seasoned mountaineer and member of the Buncombe County Search and Rescue team, led the operation. Despite high winds and near-zero visibility, he located the hikers just after midnight using thermal imaging equipment.

'It was touch-and-go for a while,' Gregory said afterward. 'The terrain was slippery, and the wind made it hard to hear, but we knew we had to get to them fast.'

Gregory and his team safely guided Lin and Dobson down the mountain, where they were treated for mild hypothermia. Both are expected to make a full recovery.

'Brian is a hero,' said Sheriff Daniel Hayes. 'His quick thinking and expertise saved lives tonight.'

When asked about the rescue, Gregory humbly shrugged it off. 'Just doing my job. I’m glad everyone’s okay.'

The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved trail signage on Mount Mitchell, one of the region’s most popular—and sometimes perilous—hiking destinations.

For now, the community is celebrating Gregory’s bravery. A local brewery has even announced a new beer in his honor: Gregory’s Peak Porter, with proceeds benefiting search and rescue efforts.
