Firefighter Bobby Smith Honored at 9/11 Funeral

Community Gathers to Honor Bobby Smith at Emotional 9/11 Funeral Episode

New York, NY – September 11, 2024

Hundreds gathered today at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan to pay their final respects to Bobby Smith, a beloved firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The emotional funeral service, held on the 23rd anniversary of the tragedy, brought together family, friends, fellow first responders, and survivors to celebrate Smith’s bravery and sacrifice.

Bobby Smith, 34 at the time of his death, was a member of FDNY’s Ladder Company 12. He was last seen rushing into the South Tower of the World Trade Center to help evacuate civilians before the building collapsed. His remains were identified only recently through advanced DNA technology, allowing his family to finally lay him to rest.

'Today, we bring Bobby home,' said his sister, Maria Rodriguez, through tears. 'For 23 years, we hoped and prayed for this moment. He was a hero not just on that day, but every day he served.'

The ceremony was filled with poignant moments, including a bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace and a flag presentation to Smith’s now-adult children, who were toddlers when he died. Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh posthumously awarded Smith the FDNY’s highest honor, the Medal of Supreme Sacrifice.

'Bobby’s courage embodies the spirit of the FDNY,' Kavanagh said. 'We will never forget his sacrifice or the thousands of others who gave everything that day.'

The funeral was one of several memorial events held across the city today, as the nation continues to honor the 2,977 lives lost on 9/11. For Smith’s family, the service brought a long-awaited sense of closure.

'He’s finally at peace,' said his widow, Diane Smith. 'And so are we.'
