Capitals Edge Out Hurricanes in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Raleigh, NC – May 11, 2025 – In a high-stakes showdown between Metropolitan Division rivals, the Washington Capitals defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime last night at PNC Arena. The victory keeps the Capitals’ playoff hopes alive while dealing a blow to the Hurricanes’ quest for home-ice advantage in the postseason.

Back-and-Forth Battle

The game was a seesaw affair from the start, with both teams exchanging blows in a fast-paced, physical contest. The Hurricanes struck first, with Sebastian Aho burying a power-play goal late in the first period. However, the Capitals responded in the second frame as Alex Ovechkin blasted a one-timer past Frederik Andersen for his 30th goal of the season.

Carolina regained the lead when Seth Jarvis capitalized on a defensive miscue, but Washington’s Dylan Strome tied it up minutes later with a slick deflection. The third period saw more drama as Andrei Svechnikov appeared to give the Hurricanes the win with a breakaway goal, only for Tom Wilson to force overtime with a clutch deflection in the final minute.

Overtime Heroics

Just 1:32 into the extra period, Capitals defenseman John Carlson ended the game with a blistering slap shot from the point, silencing the home crowd and securing two crucial points for Washington.

'These are the kinds of games you live for,' said Carlson. 'We knew we had to dig deep, and the guys showed a lot of character tonight.'

Playoff Implications

With the win, the Capitals move within two points of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, while the Hurricanes remain in a tight race for the division lead. Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour expressed frustration with his team’s defensive lapses.

'We had chances to put this game away, but we didn’t execute when it mattered,' Brind’Amour said. 'We’ve got to be better.'

The two teams will meet again next week in Washington for what promises to be another intense clash.
