The announced start time for WWE’s upcoming premium live event, Backlash, has ignited a heated debate among wrestling fans worldwide. Scheduled for Saturday, May 24, the event will take place in Lyon, France—marking WWE’s first major stadium show in the country. However, the decision to hold the event at 1 PM Eastern Time (7 PM local time) has drawn mixed reactions.

Fan Frustrations Over Early Start

Traditionally, WWE premium live events, including Backlash, have started in the evening in North America (around 8 PM ET). However, the earlier start time—aimed at accommodating European audiences—has left some U.S. fans frustrated.

'I get that WWE is trying to appeal to international fans, but 1 PM ET on a Saturday is brutal,' tweeted one fan. 'Most people have weekend plans, and this makes it hard to watch live.'

Others argued that the timing disrupts the usual 'big-fight feel' associated with WWE’s major events, as evening shows typically draw higher engagement.

European Fans Celebrate Convenient Timing

On the flip side, European fans have welcomed the schedule, as it allows them to watch the event at a reasonable hour without staying up until the early morning—a common issue with U.S.-based shows.

'Finally, a PLE that doesn’t end at 4 AM for us!' wrote a fan from Germany. 'This is a great move for international viewers.'

WWE’s Global Expansion Strategy

The decision reflects WWE’s ongoing efforts to grow its international audience under TKO Group Holdings. With recent successful events in the UK (Clash at the Castle) and Australia (Elimination Chamber), the company is clearly prioritizing global markets.

WWE has yet to respond to the backlash, but industry analysts suggest that staggered start times or dual broadcasts could be a future solution to balance fan expectations.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: Backlash is already living up to its name—even before the first bell rings.
