Cozad, Nebraska Celebrates 150 Years with Community Festivities

Cozad, Nebraska – May 11, 2025

The small but vibrant town of Cozad, Nebraska, is marking a major milestone this weekend as it celebrates its 150th anniversary with a series of events honoring its rich history and tight-knit community.

Founded in 1875 by John J. Cozad, the town was established along the Union Pacific Railroad and quickly became a hub for agriculture and transportation in central Nebraska. Over the decades, Cozad has grown into a community known for its strong work ethic, historic landmarks, and contributions to Nebraska’s cultural heritage.

The sesquicentennial celebration kicked off Friday with a parade down Meridian Avenue, featuring vintage tractors, local school bands, and floats showcasing Cozad’s past and present. The festivities continued with a barbecue at the Cozad City Park, where residents enjoyed live music, historical reenactments, and exhibits from the Robert Henri Museum, named after the famous artist and Cozad native.

'This is a special time for our town,' said Mayor Linda Thompson. 'Cozad has always been a place where neighbors support each other, and this weekend is about celebrating that spirit. We’re proud of our history and excited for the future.'

One of the highlights of the weekend was the unveiling of a new mural depicting Cozad’s railroad heritage, painted by local artists on the side of the historic downtown depot. Additionally, the Cozad Development Group announced plans for a new community center aimed at fostering youth programs and small business growth.

As the celebration continues through Sunday, residents and visitors alike are reflecting on what makes Cozad unique—its resilience, camaraderie, and enduring small-town charm.

'Generations of my family have called Cozad home,' said longtime resident Jim Peterson. 'It’s more than just a place; it’s a family. That’s worth celebrating.'
