Emma pulled her thick woolen blanket tighter around her shoulders, her breath visible in the freezing air. The fire in the hearth crackled, its warmth barely reaching her. Outside, the snow fell in thick, relentless sheets, blanketing the world in white.

The radio on the table crackled to life, breaking the eerie silence. 'This is an emergency broadcast. A severe blizzard warning is in effect for the next 48 hours. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid all travel. Repeat, do not attempt to travel—'

Emma sighed, cutting off the broadcast with a flick of the dial. She had been snowed in before, but this storm felt different. The air was heavy with an unspoken tension, as if the mountains themselves were holding their breath.

She glanced at the old photograph on the mantle—her and her brother, Jack, grinning ear to ear after their first successful hike up the peak. That was five years ago, before he disappeared during a storm just like this one. The search parties had found no trace of him, and the mountains had kept their secrets.

A sudden knock at the door jolted her from her thoughts. Her heart raced. No one should be out in this weather. The knock came again, louder this time, more insistent.

Cautiously, Emma approached the door, her hand trembling as she reached for the handle. She peered through the frosted glass, but the storm obscured everything beyond a few feet. Taking a deep breath, she opened the door.

A figure stood there, hunched and covered in snow. Emma's breath caught in her throat as the person lifted their head, revealing a face she thought she'd never see again.

'Jack?' she whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind.

He staggered forward, collapsing into her arms. His skin was ice-cold, his clothes tattered and frozen. 'Emma,' he croaked, his voice raw and broken. 'I made it back... but I wasn't alone.'

Before she could respond, the wind slammed the door shut behind him, plunging the cabin into darkness. The fire sputtered and died, leaving only the sound of the storm raging outside—and something else, something moving in the shadows.

Emma's heart pounded as she helped Jack to the couch, her mind racing. 'What do you mean you weren't alone?' she demanded, her voice shaking.

Jack's eyes darted to the window, where the snow swirled like a living thing. 'The storm... it's not natural. There's something out there, Emma. Something that followed me.'

As if on cue, a low, guttural growl echoed through the cabin, vibrating in her chest. The temperature dropped even further, frost creeping up the walls. Emma's breath came in shallow gasps as she realized the truth—the blizzard wasn't just a warning.
