Local Hero Beto Terrazas Saves Family from Burning Building

El Paso, TX – May 22, 2024 – In an act of extraordinary bravery, local construction worker Roberto 'Beto' Terrazas rescued a family of four from a burning apartment building early Tuesday morning.

According to fire officials, the blaze broke out around 2:30 a.m. at the Sierra Vista Apartments on the east side of El Paso. Neighbors reported hearing smoke alarms and screams from the second floor. That’s when Terrazas, 34, who lives across the street, sprang into action.

'I just saw the smoke and heard kids crying,' Terrazas said. 'I didn’t think—I just ran in.'

Witnesses say Terrazas kicked down the door of the engulfed unit and helped a mother, father, and their two young children escape through a window just before the roof collapsed. Firefighters arrived minutes later and contained the fire, but they credited Terrazas with saving lives.

'You don’t see that kind of courage every day,' said Fire Chief Daniel Moreno. 'He risked his life without hesitation.'

The family, who suffered minor smoke inhalation, was treated at a nearby hospital and released. Terrazas, a humble father of two, downplayed his actions. 'Anyone would’ve done the same,' he said. 'I’m just glad they’re okay.'

City officials say they plan to honor Terrazas at next week’s council meeting for his heroism.
