Peter was a clockmaker—a master of gears, springs, and pendulums. His tiny shop, tucked between a bakery and a bookstore, was filled with the steady tick-tock of countless timepieces.

But Peter had a secret.

Among his collection was an ancient, silver pocket watch with no markings, no brand, and—most strangely—no way to open it. He had found it years ago in his grandfather’s attic, buried under old letters and dusty hats. No matter how hard he tried, Peter couldn’t pry it open or make it tick. Yet, sometimes, when the moonlight spilled through his workshop window, he swore he heard a faint whisper coming from inside.

One autumn evening, as the wind howled outside, Peter finally lost patience. He took his finest tools and, with careful precision, attempted one last time to open the watch. Just as his screwdriver slipped, a sharp click echoed through the room. The watch popped open—and time stopped.

The ticking of every clock in the shop froze. The wind outside hung motionless. Even the candle flames stood still, like painted glass. Inside the watch’s face, instead of numbers, were tiny, glowing symbols Peter had never seen before. And then, a voice—soft but clear—spoke from within.

'Peter Marks… you’ve been chosen.'

Suddenly, the hands of the watch began to spin backward. The room blurred around him, and in an instant, Peter was no longer in his shop. He stood in the middle of Eldermere’s town square—but it wasn’t the Eldermere he knew. The buildings were older, the people dressed in clothes from a century past. Peter’s heart raced. The Great Fire had destroyed half the town in 1893. If he was really in the past… could he stop it?

With the mysterious watch in hand, Peter raced through the streets, piecing together clues, meeting long-dead ancestors, and unraveling the truth: the watch was a Time Keeper’s device, passed down through his family. Its purpose? To mend broken moments in history.

But changing the past came with a cost. Every adjustment Peter made began to erase his own memories. The more he fixed, the more he forgot—his shop, his friends, even his own name.

As the fire raged toward the town hall, Peter faced a choice: let history unfold as it had, preserving himself, or sacrifice his own past to save hundreds.

With a deep breath, he made his decision.

The moment he acted, the world spun again.

Peter awoke in his workshop, the silver watch cold in his palm. It was sealed shut once more. Outside, the wind blew, the clocks ticked, and Eldermere stood whole and unharmed.

But when a customer greeted him as 'Mr. Collins,' and his own reflection showed a stranger’s face, Peter realized the price he’d paid.

He had saved the town.

But now, no one remembered Peter Marks had ever existed.
