Former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik Announces Bid for Governor of New York

Albany, NY — Bernard Kerik, the former New York City Police Commissioner under Mayor Rudy Giuliani, has officially declared his candidacy for Governor of New York in the 2026 election. The controversial law enforcement veteran, who served time in federal prison before receiving a presidential pardon, made the announcement at a rally in Albany, positioning himself as a 'tough-on-crime' alternative to current Democratic leadership.

Kerik, 68, rose to national prominence following the 9/11 attacks for his role in coordinating the NYPD’s response. However, his career was later marred by legal troubles, including a 2010 guilty plea for tax fraud and false statements. He was pardoned by then-President Donald Trump in 2020.

In his campaign speech, Kerik vowed to 'clean up New York' by cracking down on crime, opposing sanctuary city policies, and rolling back criminal justice reforms. 'New Yorkers deserve safety, accountability, and a government that puts them first—not criminals or political elites,' he declared to a crowd of supporters.

Political analysts are divided on Kerik’s chances. Some see his hardline stance resonating in a state where crime remains a top voter concern, while others question whether his past will deter moderate and independent voters.

Current Governor Kathy Hochul’s team dismissed Kerik’s bid as a 'longshot stunt,' but Republicans hope his high-profile entry could energize the base in a crucial election year.

Kerik will face primary challenges, including from more establishment GOP figures, but his fiery rhetoric and media savvy could make him a wildcard in the race.
