Balochistan Faces Escalating Unrest Amid Calls for Greater Autonomy

Quetta, Pakistan – June 10, 2024

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but least populous province, is once again in the spotlight as protests, security operations, and demands for autonomy intensify. The region, rich in natural resources yet plagued by underdevelopment and insurgency, has long been a flashpoint for conflict between separatist groups and government forces.

Rising Unrest and Military Operations

In recent weeks, security forces have conducted multiple operations in Mastung, Khuzdar, and Kech districts, targeting alleged hideouts of banned militant organizations. Officials claim these operations have neutralized several 'terrorists' and recovered arms, but human rights groups accuse the military of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and other separatist factions have retaliated with attacks on security convoys and infrastructure projects, including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through the region.

Protest Movements Grow

Families of missing persons, including the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP), continue their sit-in protests in Quetta and Karachi, demanding accountability for thousands of allegedly forcibly disappeared individuals. Meanwhile, student groups and political activists are mobilizing against what they call 'state oppression' and 'economic exploitation' of Baloch resources.

Government Response

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government has pledged to address grievances through dialogue and development initiatives. However, critics argue that past promises have yielded little change. The military maintains that its operations are necessary to combat terrorism and ensure stability.

International Attention

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have urged Pakistan to investigate alleged abuses in Balochistan. Meanwhile, neighboring Afghanistan and Iran have raised concerns over cross-border militant movements, further complicating the security landscape.

As tensions escalate, analysts warn that without meaningful political engagement and economic reforms, Balochistan’s cycle of violence may worsen, deepening the divide between the state and its people.
