How to set ATR in unfused card with detailed explanations.

What is ATR?

ATR is the serial number of the card. When a POS and ATM reads a card:

a) It reads first ATR[1] [2] and
b) select Applet in the Card.

What causes SmartCard rejection?

There is immediate rejection when:
a) It cannot select the Mag Stripe
b) It cannot read correct ATR.
c) It cannot select the Chip's Applet and
d) It cannot read the Chip Applet's Track 2 data.

For the MagStripe, please get a MagStripe. EMVFoundry only covers the Chip part (b), (c) and (d).

How to set ATR?

EMVFoundry has two ways to set ATR:

  • Set and leave Unfused - You can change the ATR anytime, until you use set data on the card.
  • Set and Fuse - You can't change the ATR of the card afterwards. This is required to write data to the card.

You need to know the difference between the two settings, as people get confused and frustrated.

After you "Set and Fuse", you can write data to the card. See next article.

Step 1. Select ATR from Menu

From Toolbar
From Menu

Step 2 - Fuse ATR Dialog

Click or tap the "Read SmartCard" button at the lower-left.

Fuse ATR & Install Applets Dialog Box

Step 3A - Set ATR Don't Fuse Card.

When you set ATR, there's this checkbox - Fuse ATR (ATR cannot be changed again. Check this box when you are 100% confirmed) - leave this checkbox unchecked.

Set ATR.

Confirmation message.

The dialog will go to an endless loop, so you can then set ATR over and over again.

Step 3B - Set ATR and Fuse Card

1) Enter ATR
2) Check the Fuse ATR (ATR cannot be changed again. Check this box when you are 100% confirmed) and

3) Click the "Set ATR and Fuse Card" button.

Card is now fused. Click on the "Write to SmartCard. Open IST, ZLD, EMVF, CT files" or "Read from Card" button.
