The festival was first held in 1999[1][2] and has grown to be the second biggest book festival in Scotland. In 2007 the Wigtown Festival Company became a registered charity. In 2013, there were 7500 visiters to the festival, more than half of which were from outside Dumfries and Galloway.[5] A report commissioned by the Wigtown Festival Company in 2013 estimated that the festival contributed £2 million to the regional economy each year.
This was three times higher than that estimated by a similar study in 2008. The festival runs an annual poetry competition and awards three separate prizes for compositions in English, Scottish Gaelic and Scots.Wigtown was officially designated as Scotland's National Book Town in 1998 and is now home to a wide range of book-related businesses. A book lovers haven – and with over quarter of a million books to choose from, old and new … it is impossible to escape empty-handed. 29 April - 1 May 2016 We're delighted to announce the programme for Wigtown’s annual Spring Book Weekend taking place from Friday 29 April - Sunday 1 May 2016.
