So who in has the most teeth in the animal kingdom? Any guesses before your read on? The answer is not as simple as you might think. A shark comes to mind but although they go through unlimited sets of teeth, they only have have about 50 at any one time. Believe it or not snails can have up to 25600 teeth like projections on their radula but these aren't true teeth. The land animal with the most true teeth is the Giant Armadillo who can have between 80-100 teeth! Overall winner is the spinner dolphin who have 252 teeth!! Cromwell Veterinary GroupOnce plaque & tartar has built up it can be hard to remove - here's a video of veterinary dental treatment to remove it. Plaque & tartar build up can cause serious health problems for our pets.

Not only can they loose the tooth, the bacteria can enter their bloodstream and is associated with damage to the heart, liver and kidneys! Dental hygiene is just as important for our pets as it is us. While we now spend our time performing dental treatment on cats, dogs and rabbits (especially at the moment since it's Dental Health Month - ask about our special offers), we used to look after horses teeth too. A herbivore's teeth are quite different and they exploit some structural features of teeth. Their molar teeth (back teeth) have alternating areas of enamel and dentin. Because dentin is softer than enamel, it wears away quicker with chewing - this leaves ridges. These ridges help enormously to help the horse chew plant material more efficiently - other herbivores have teeth like this too. If our dentin was exposed, we would have very sensitive teeth!Cromwell Veterinary GroupIt Dental Health Month at Cromwell Vets! Save up to £68 on veterinary dental treatment*. Who has the biggest teeth? Hippopotamus' insisors (front teeth) commonly grow to 3 feet long! But this can be beaten if you consider the elephant's tusks to be teeth (which they are but modified ones!) - the longest known elephant tusk was 11.5ft long! That's pretty much the same as the height of 2 adult people!Cromwell Veterinary GroupWant to work with us? Cromwell Veterinary Group updated their cover photo.Cromwell Veterinary Group shared Veterinary Neurology's video. You may have heard about this. This is the information and advice from our fellow Vets at Davies Veterinary Specialists. Thiamine deficiency - advice As pet owners you may be concerned about the recent recall of some cat food products potentially linked to Thiamine (vitamin B1 deficiency). We have sent information to referring veterinary practices outlining the causes, treatment and diagnosis of Thiamine related conditions. If you are concerned your pet is displaying any of t...he following symptoms please book an appointment to see your vet: • severe weight loss / anorexia • vomiting • impaired vision • dilated pupils, • tremors and seizures. Please remember this can be treated upon early diagnosis. Please note Davies Veterinary Specialists will not comment on the recall of products. A Facebook post by our Head of Neurology Laurent Garosi has gone viral with over 8000 shares and a reach of over 1 million.

/neurologyforvets/ Posted by Veterinary NeurologySUSPECTED THIAMINE DEFICIENCY - FOOD PRODUCT RECALL – PLEASE SHARE This 5 year old cat was referred to us at Davies Veterinary Specialists 6 months ago with two... days history of lethargy, head pressing, tremors and short episodes of rigidity. Neuro exam revealed depressed mental status, mydriasis, severe generalised ataxia, delayed postural reaction on all four limbs, decreased menace response in both eyes and positional nystagmus. Following stimulation or dorsal extension of the neck (video attached), the cat was showing marked ventro-flexion of the neck, tremors and spasms on all flour limbs while remaining aware of her surrounding. MRI (next FB post) showed bilateral symmetrical lesions at the level of caudal colliculi and lateral geniculate nuclei. CSF, blood folate/B12, haematology and serum biochemistry were normal. Although thiamine blood level could not be tested on this particular case presented in a weekend and requiring urgent supplementation, thiamine deficiency was strongly suspected based on clinical presentation or MRI findings suggestive of metabolic or toxic disease process.

This cat was immediately given thiamine 25 mg IM which was continued IM twice daily for 2 days before switching to oral supplementation. The neurological signs which were progressive until that point improved dramatically within less than 24 hours and the cat returned to normal within 3 days. Thiamine supplementation was stopped after 2 months and the cat remains normal since. At the time, we advised the owner as a precaution to change type of food in case of an abnormal batch of food deficient in thiamine. We have been made aware yesterday that 5 other cats has been seen in two other UK referral centres with similar issue. /petsathomeUK/ Tests are currently being done to determine the cause of that lower thiamine level in these products. If you have concerns that your cat may be showing any of these signs after switching to one of the four affected products then you should stop feeding and seek immediate veterinary advice. We and the owner of this cat (which was fed with one of the food product being recall) wanted to alert you of sign of thiamine deficiency which can be totally reversible with supplementation if detected soon enough.
