My son (C5 tetraplegic) is in the Philippines for an extended holiday. He is now in Bacolod, Negros Occidental, where his nurse is from. He would like to spend some time at a nice beach with a good social scene. He would travel by private car / ferry from Bacolod. As travelling is difficult for him it would be good to find a place that would be worth spending a few weeks at -- with a really nice beach for swimming, cafés and bars for hanging out and meeting people and decent budget to mid-range accommodation. Given the time of year, any recommendations? And generally, any suggestions for sightseeing / beach resorts elsewhere in the Philippines that are relatively accessible for a wheelchair user? Hope others read this post and reply.Hi, I travelled in the Philippines extensively – albeit a long time ago and before I was in a wheelchair! Particularly if your son is travelling with a local, I don't think he will have any problem getting around because Filipinos are among the most helpful, friendly and kind people I have ever come across.
While the infrastructure may not be there, there will always be helping hands – and since there is also a great deal of financial need, your son will be able to pay for assistance when he needs it. When I travelled in India with my power wheelchair, I simply paid bystanders the equivalent of a dollar each to lift my chair in and out of an unmodified minivan – and we were all happy! I'm sure this will be the same in the Philippines if your son need to transfer himself and his wheelchair in and out of boats and vehicles.Martin HengAccessible Travel Manager, Lonely PlanetIn response to #2Martin thank you so much for your reply and your helpful suggestions. We are still struggling to decide on a place to go. There are so many options and we lack local knowledge. The simplest place to get to from where they are now (Bacolod) seems to be Sipalay, but it looks like a quiet place at the best of times and we're afraid that it will be absolutely dead at this time of year. Do you have any suggestions as to the best place to go now -- August -- where my son could swim in the sea and be sure of having people around to talk to?
Which beach resorts are open and fairly lively year round? I believe that at this time of year the eastern parts of the Philippines are less subject to bad weather. Any ideas would be appreciated.I would suggest posting your question on the relevant destination page of the Thorn Tree. I recently came across the following website.
