The legs are arranged like the spokes of a wheel. There are 5 legs. The diameter of the circle at the ends of the legs is about 26 inches if that helps. I had no problems with the casters, used a hammer and block of wood to tap them into place. I found the chair to be well made and easy to put together. Worst case scenario, with the wheels at the widest point would be 26 inches. Because it has 5 wheels, you can always turn the base so that only 2 go under the desk opening, making the chair go under with only the width of the seat to worry about. Seat width is 19 inches "I am also having difficulty inserting the casters into the chair base.

Just make sure you do not lay the wooden base (as you hammer the casters into the hole) on something hard, such as a tile floor or concrete. It will crack the wood. We found this out the hard way! Hello D13, you will be contacted by Customer Care regarding the casters. Rest the base upside down on the floor pushing a leg down with something holding the opposite side up so the leg is firm. Then I held the caster so the stem was aligned with the chair base hole and using a block of wood or metal punch directly in line with the stem, I used a mallet to tap the caster in by hitting the block of wood or punch. It shouldn't take more than two taps of the mallet. Make sure the caster stem is aligned with hole in the chair base since the hole will be at an angle. You need to have large hands to hold the caster and the block of wood or punch or a helper to help you hold it. A mallet works better than a hammer because the mallet is bigger making it easier to hit the wood or punch. A large diameter punch is better than a small diameter one.
If you are directing the force of the mallet directly inline withe hole in the base, the caster will pop in with minimum force. Hitting it too hard can damage something. My husband had to get them locked in place and it took strength and force. It just took a lot more strength than I am capable of. Thanks everyone who responded... you were right on! I got updated manufacturer instructions from Overstock also... the new instructions said to use a cleat and mallet..
