Commentary: When Socialist Cults Call Things "Free"

Updated: 2022-07-25

(1) Nothing is free.

(2) Calling things "free" is a passive-aggressive socialist code-word for "you will not have to pay – others will pay for you, through taxes."

(3) Declaring a good or service to be a right will always result in mandates: government forcing people to do things.

In the first place, if you and I are the only people in the world, then saying you have a right to a good or service means that I have a duty to provide that good or service (otherwise, such “rights” are meaningless without corresponding duties). Now, just expand that rights-make-mandates analysis society-wide.

Second, government mandating “free” goods and services requires expensive administration – writing laws, communicating the laws, enforcing the laws, punishing noncompliance, adjudicating exceptions and grievances, etc. All this simply makes the good and services that much more expensive in an absolute sense.

Third, when things are “free,” then no one has any incentive to economize – leading to massive over-consumption and waste.

Fourth, when people think things are free – then the people develop a sense of entitlement, which is precisely the opposite of both (a) a work ethic, and even (b) a survival instinct.
