A short time ago in a galaxy not so far away, the great Jedi Smita of The Party Wall created this seriously unbelievable Legos & Lightsabers Star Wars Birthday Party for her little Youngling’s “Sith” Birthday! With some bright building blocks, clever treats and a little help from our favorite Droids, Smita used the Force to create this incredible party saga {beautifully captured by Kathie Tam Photography}. PARTY DETAILS, as told by Smita… Legos and Lightsabers: A Lego Star Wars-inspired party The “Legos and Lightsabers” theme for my son’s 6th birthday party (aka his “Sith” birthday party) was chosen, as usual, by the birthday boy himself. He is OBSESSED with Lego, particularly Star Wars Lego! Since I was trying to incorporate the Lego theme and Star Wars theme into one party, in order to unify the two, I stayed away from the bold, primary colors of traditional Lego and opted instead for blue, black, silver and yellow as the main colors for the party. Below is a summary of some of the main elements: The lightsaber-shaped “pop up” invitations are embossed so that they had the look of a Lego “baseplate”. My son helped with the wording for the invitations, coming up with the concept of his “sith birthday” himself. The backdrop for the dessert table was also inspired by the Lego baseplate—I used plastic plates to create the raised “pegs” on the backdrop.
I made the oversized Lego blocks using photo storage boxes and clear plastic appetizer cups. I painted the insides of the appetizer cups to match the colors of the storage boxes, and then I placed them on the storage boxes to create the “pegs” of the Lego blocks. The dessert table featured a two-tier birthday cake and cupcakes adorned with custom cake and cupcake toppers, Star Wars sugar-cookies, Star Wars cake pops, Star Wars Pez dispensers, DIY M&M lightsabers, homemade lightsaber pretzels rods, homemade Lego rice krispie treats, space rock candy, and Lego-shaped candy. The cupcake wrappers and tray liners were also embossed to look like Lego base plate. I made the stand for the cake pops using large building bricks. PARTY GAMES AND ACTIVITIES When each guest arrived, they received a “Jedi Mission” card that explained their mission to them. For each completed mission, they got a gold star to stick on their card. They completed the following Jedi missions: Escape from the Death Star: this mission involved navigating through an obstacle course inspired by Star Wars, Episode IV.
Some of the obstacles included navigating through Storm Trooper laser fire (red string tied between trees), wading through a trash pit (a ball pit filled with cardboard tubes), shooting down a tie fighter (the tie fighter was made of a paper lantern and rolled up newspapers), bowling down the Storm Troopers, and finally, bombing the Death Star (a corn hole game). Build a Droid: this mission involved crafting an R2D2 droid. I pre-cut all the “droid components” so the children just had to stick them on. Complete Light saber training: the children battled it out at this station, using pool noodle lightsabers and white balloons on which I drew Storm Trooper faces. Design a Lego Starfighter: I packaged an assortment of Lego bricks into Lego-shaped boxes. Each child used the Lego bricks to design their own “star fighter”. Fight in the Jedi Bubblewars: The children got to play with lightsaber-shaped bubble wands and attack the bubbles. The younger children had a blast with this activity.
Pose in the Intergalactic Photo booth: photo booth are always so much fun and making it part of the mission was a great way to make sure I got photos of every single guest at the party. The children had fun posing with the Darth Vader standee, lightsabers, various Star Wars masks, DIY Yoda ears, DIY Princess Leia hair buns etc. The backdrop was made using paper plates as the “pegs” on the Lego base plate and a Darth Vader standee. Darth Vader Pinata: the children had fun attacking the Darth Vader piñata with a DIY piñata stick wrapped to look like (you guessed it) a light saber! Hunt for the Darth Vader Candle: this was the final mission of the party. I had all the children gather and told them it was almost time for cake, but that the Darth Vader candle had been stolen. Their mission was to help me find the candle by answering a series of questions that led through a “scavenger hunt” game. I had a group of the parents holding up signs of various Star Wars characters with clues leading them to the next character.
The very last clue led them to the location of the stolen candle…and a surprise—Darth Vader himself! Darth then gave each child a DIY Jedi robe and a Jedi Knight certificate and had a lightsaber fighter with the birthday boy. When he told me I’d made his birthday wish come true to have a lightsaber fight with Darth, I knew it was worth all the effort! The birthday boy dressed up as Luke Skywalker and his baby sister was dressed as Princess Leia, complete with her “I am the Princess” onesie and hair buns. Family members, who manned each activity station, each wore “I have Jedi Powers” t-shirts. I like to tie the theme throughout each element of the party—even the food and drinks. Among other things, we had Yoda’s swamp dip, Darth Maul-E salsa, and Jabba “the Pizza” Hutt. Drinks, including Vader-ade, Solo-han Blanc and Chew’s Brews for the adults, were served at the Creature Cantina, while the children enjoyed Yoda Soda. I used large building blocks to serve as place card holders.
