However there are other “companies” there that also sell what appears to be LEGO but in reality, they’re just cheap knock-offs from China. Stephen went around to a few booths showing what products they’re selling and found there were about “20-30” booths selling all kinds of counterfeit LEGO from bricks to minifigures. As LEGO fans, we know which minifigures are legit and which are not but parents and kids who aren’t enthusiasts can’t really tell the difference because they look so similar and are priced way cheaper.
As one person at these booths states about selling fake LEGO, That statements bugs me because they’re all about the money. Notice they don’t even use the correct terminology when describing where the minifigures are standing on as they only call it “the thing.” Not a stand or on studs but “the thing.” Note that this was at New York Comic Con, one of the largest fan conventions in the US. This is my first time hearing about booths selling fake LEGO products at these conventions as I don’t see them at San Diego Comic Con but then again, they are different organizers so they probably don’t care what is sold there. As LEGO keeps growing bigger and bigger, the more likely companies in China will continue to churn out these counterfeits. It wasn’t that too long ago that Huw over on Brickset did a review on some. There’s really no way to stop them as trademark and copyright laws don’t work over there. At least there will be a new factory being built in China to try to combat this.
Also keep in mind the difference between legit custom minifigures and knockoffs. Real custom minifigures use real LEGO products with modifications to them whether in printing, accessories, etc. Knockoffs use cheap plastic and paint and the quality is subpar and could be potentially dangerous for younger children to play with. Even at Toys R Us, you can’t really be too careful as they’re also selling some fake LEGO Racers stuff on the endcaps. If you’re going to these conventions or just shopping in general and find what appears to be LEGO, just use some due diligence and make sure that you’re getting the real thing. The miniature astronomer, chemist and palaeontologist are the result of a successful pitch by geophysicist Ellen Kooijman on Lego Ideas, a platform which allows anyone to share their concepts and collect online supporters.“As a female scientist I had noticed two things about the available Lego sets: a skewed male/female minifigure ratio and a rather stereotypical representation of the available female figures. It seemed logical that I would suggest a small set of female minifigures in interesting professions to make our Lego city communities more diverse,” Kooijman writes on her blog.According to a guest blogger for Scientific American, the ratio of all-time Lego figurines is roughly four males to every female. A few months ago, Charlotte Benjamin, a seven-year-old Lego fan, picked up on this bias. In a letter that went viral, she told the company that although she “love[s] Lego”, she had noticed that “there are more Lego boy people and barely any Lego girls.”She went on to say that “all the girls did was sit at home, got to the beach, and shop, and had no jobs,” while the boy figures “went on adventures, worked, saved people, and had jobs, even swam with sharks”.
Benjamin's letter ended with the request: "I want you to make more Lego girl people and let them go on adventures and have fun, ok!?!" Lego responded by saying that new figurines were in development. Last year, the Danish toy manufacturer released their first female scientist figurine: Professor C. Bodin, winner of the “coveted Nobrick Prize” and an expert at attaching new pieces to minifigures that have lost their legs. The freshly launched Research Institute builds on the same idea by bringing three scientific professions together in one set. The astronomer is furnished with a telescope, the chemist with laboratory flasks and the palaeontologist with the skeleton of a T-rex, predicted by Kooijman to be the most popular element of the toy. When the first images of the new set were released, Lego faced some criticism for adapting the standard mould in order to give the female figurines an hour-glass shape. The toy scientists also appear to be wearing make-up, something which caught Kooijman’s eye when she was reviewing the final product.
She writes in her blog: “I strongly discourage wearing make-up in the lab, because it may cause contamination of the samples.”The Government outlined plans this summer to work with the toy industry in encouraging girls to engage with science and engineering in order to promote women in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).Lego’s latest offering does seem to tap into a need for toys that show women in non-traditional roles. The initial stock of the Research Institute sold out in a matter of days, although those who are patient enough to wait a month can still order theirs online. Registration for next month’s LEGO Mini Model Build is now available. The event runs on Tuesday, March 7 and Wednesday, March 8 at your local LEGO Brand Retail Store. You can register online. Available for LEGO VIPs only. Learn how to build a cool mini model at the store, and take it home after – for free! Quantities are limited and offer is good while supplies last only. Models must be built in store, are not for sale and cannot be purchased. Ask a Brick Specialist for details. Due to safety and build experience standards, builders must be between the ages of 6-14 to participate. The mini model must be completely built in store.
