Zao Onsen buying hash

Especially Okama Crater. Though sitting not at the top, the crater lake is the pinnacle experience for Mount Zao visitors. The grandest reward for travelers who come all the way to this remote wilderness. As the bus from Kaminoyama Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture scaled the winding roads of Mount Zao, the meter tall active volcano that stands on the Miyagi Prefecture-Yamagata Prefecture border, the scenery changed at almost every turn and each one had their own charm. First came the shrubby fields with farmlands and brownish green mountains looming in the distance. Then rows of bare trees on the snow-blanketed ground took over. I wish I could see these scenes without the bus window in between. What was the most exciting for me during my journey along Zao Echo Line, however, were snow fields dotted with deep green conifer trees. At some point, someone asked the driver something and the driver happily launched into a long explanation about the scenery outside the bus windows. From my existing knowledge, juhyo are ice trees or snow monsters and Mount Zao is one of the few places where you can see this ghostly phenomenon. Winter in Tohoku is harsh and every year the mountains in the region see heavy snowfalls for about six months. The branch and leaves of conifer trees carry a lot of icicles and snow and continuously hit by icy winds, they are sculpted into strange shapes and forms. The best time to meet the snow monsters is February, but by May, they will have shapeshifted back into their leafy selves. Here is to hoping I get to witness the metamorphosis of monsters one day. The journey takes about 60 minutes from Kaminoyama Onsen to the chairlift station of Mount Zao, so the rest stop is a welcome break from the bus ride. The rest area of Mount Zao is huge and chock-full of top local products from Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures. That is expected because the area is a popular ski resort, its ski season beginning in November and ending in April or May. The snow-capped range of Mount Ou instantly makes the, admittedly, dry landscape prettier. After the rest stop, the bus continued onward to Zao Katta Lift Station. The short chairlift ride transports you to the peak Kattadake and from there, you can walk to the view deck for Okama Crater. As the bus came to a stop, the driver tried to announced something in Japanese and I failed miserably to understand him. I was the last passenger to leave the bus and tried to ask what he meant with my limited Japanese. He tried his best to explain, but I failed again. Suddenly, two Japanese women walked back onto the bus. My mind vaguely registered them as fellow passengers. They spoke English and told me they would help me talk to the driver! They interpreted for me and at last, I understood that the driver told me to come back to the bus in about an hour and the bus would be waiting for us here. Since I had to catch a train to Tendo , I would have to make do with the amount of time I had. They sacrificed what little time we had on Kattadake to help me. I thanked and bowed to both them and the driver before heading into the chairlift station. So I talked to the ladies and they told me they are mother and daughter. I enjoyed my day trip in Kobe two years ago and shared my experience with them. When it was finally our turn to buy the chairlift tickets, the mother told me they had a discount coupon for the chairlift. The daughter explained that we three could purchased our tickets together as a family. As each chairlift is designed to transport only one person, I parted ways with the kind family. I hope they will meet kind people wherever they travel to. The surroundings along the way up Kattadake were greener than the bus route. Bare trees and melting snow were still present, though. When the chairlift dropped me off on Kattadake, I was struck by the drastically different sceneries and the area was even more expansive than I thought. The views were a pleasant distraction. The desolate landscape was about to come alive again with green and reddish brown shrubs. However, the snow remained in some areas and the further I walked up the trail, the less green it was. If you hike Kattadake in the summer months, you will be walking on the green ground, before turning fiery red in autumn. But since the trail opens from late-April and closes in winter, I will take what I can get. However, I got to see the crater lake from the trail. Shaped like a Japanese-style cooking pot or Okama, the crater is aptly named Okama Crater. It is a very big pot, measuring about 1, meters in circumference. Formed by volcanic eruption in , Okama Crater is highly acidic, thus devoid of any life forms. The crater lake is famous for its water colors. With five color variations, the lake changes its colors depending on the sunlight and the temperature. That is how it gets the nickname Goshikinuma Five-colored Pond. The default color seems to be emerald, but I got to see aquamarine, plus some whip cream-like snow and ice sheets. Okama Crater and the lake might not be at their most beautiful that day, but it was a strangely charming sight for sure. About hundred years ago, the maximum depth of the lake was 63 meters, but since the cliff walls gradually collapse, the deepest area now measures only about 27 meters. It is sad such a unique lake will be buried one day…. But it was really hard to move fast. By the time I got to sit on the chairlift again, I had exactly five minutes before the bus left and the chairlift ride takes about five minutes. And I made it! The driver kept cheering me on until I literally hop onto the bus. As I tried to thank the driver and apologize and huff and puff at the same time, the driver and everyone on the bus started clapping! I checked my watch and found out I was late for a couple of minutes. While this delay might be considered trivial in other countries, Japanese people are very punctual and I myself hate to be late when it involves other people. I really should have spared more time. However, everyone was very kind. The driver looked genuinely glad I arrived and beside him were the mother and daughter from Kobe who helped me earlier. The other passengers smiled at me. Some even gave me a thumbs up. The view of Okama Crater was truly a sight to behold, but I suppose the no. However, you can go up Mount Zao in winter for skiing. Please check Japan-Guide for more info. Then you can board the free shuttle bus to the Zao Katta Lift Station. You can also start your journey from a major city in Yamagata Prefecture. Fee: yen Round-trip ticket for the chairlift. Instagram LinkedIn. Search for: Close. My heart melted and I wish I could do more than thanking them! I still had the heart to admire these views, but I was getting more and more nervous. When my feet touched the ground again, I saw my bus and broke into a sprint. Share this story: Tweet.
