A Texas teacher pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault Wednesday after she was impregnated by a 13-year-old student, PEOPLE confirms.

Alexandria Vera , 24, had sex with the teen boy almost daily for nine months, an Aldine Independent School District Police Department spokesman confirms to PEOPLE.

She became pregnant but later had an abortion after Child Protective Services questioned her about the relationship, Vera told investigators.

“As parents, we entrust teachers with a very important role to educate students and we should not be concerned about teachers getting in a sexual relationship with our children while they are at school,” Assistant District Attorney Tiffany Dupree with the Child Abuse Division told KHOU .

She was initially charged with continuous sex abuse of a child — which could have landed her a life sentence — but pleading guilty to the lesser charge as part of the deal could cut her prison time down to 30 years, CBS News reports. The child is now 14 years old, according to CBS.

Vera was taken into custody in June after Montgomery County Police issued an arrest warrant for her. Vera acknowledged having a sexual relationship with the student and told officials that the two started to be intimate last September after meeting each other during summer school at Stovall Middle School.

Vera told investigators that she and the boy “love each other,” according to CBS news.

The school’s police spokesman tells PEOPLE he believes Vera resigned from her position at the school because of the situation, adding that she is expected to be sentenced in January.

Vera’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

A FEMALE teacher dared a 14-year-old student to touch her sexually in class, telling him, “you don’t have the balls”, a court has heard.
Aussie former high school teacher Monica Elizabeth Young, 24, told the boy that "it‘s dangerous if we get caught but if you do it, it will be worth it".
In an emotion plea to the court and District Court Judge Kate Traill during sentencing on Thursday, the former educator said she was "extremely embarrassed" and "ashamed" of her actions, news.com.au reports.
"I am unable to fully express how sorry I am for my actions," she said.
"I cannot imagine how (the boy) and his family felt … it will be something they carry with them for the rest of their lives and it's not something I can take back or change."
Young found the teen on Snapchat and began bombarding messages which said she was "waiting for him" while begging him to send X-rated photos .
Investigators previously said she was charged with assaulting the boy on five separate occasions - including at school and in her car.
Her barrister Margaret Cunneen SC told the court Young's judgement had been blurred by the stresses of teaching during Covid-19 without proper training or support.
She said the woman suffered from significant stress from the breakdown of her engagement.
Young began teaching in March 2020 shortly before lockdown and online teaching began.
"Students could message you up until midnight. There were no boundaries for online teaching,” she told a Sydney District Court on Thursday.
When classes resumed, she dared the student to give her a hug, saying he "didn't have the balls".
Sex acts took place in empty classrooms, on a staircase, and once during a movie screening with other students close by.
CCTV footage caught Young driving to meet the teen in a park shortly after messaging him that "it's dangerous if we get caught, but if you do it, it'll be worth it".
She was eventually spotted by the victim's family, who then alerted the school principle and police.
Hitting back at Cunneen's claims, prosecutor Alexander Terracini said: "While it may be accepted Ms Young didn't go into teaching to have access to children the fact is within months … she was abusing one of them.
Young admitted to initiating physical contact with the boy on each occasion over a two-week period.
Medical reports cite her as having borderline personality disorder features and that she was deeply affected by the demise of her engagement.

A 63-year-old veteran high school teacher in North Carolina is charged with having sex with a 17-year-old student, authorities said.
Emma Neil Ogle, of Huntersville, was arrested late Thursday after the victim 46 years her junior reported that the pair began a relationship in the spring that took an intimate turn over the summer, WSOC reports .
Ogle was taken into custody hours after the student told school staffers at Garinger High School in Charlotte about the allegations.
There’s no indication that the sex acts took place on school grounds, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools told WCNC .
“I recognized her,” one senior at the school, Edward Ramon, told the station. “It’s just disgusting. It’s shocking and disgusting.”
The allegations will likely tarnish the school’s reputation, Ramon said.
“It just makes the school look bad,” he continued. “I think she should go to prison for that.”
Attempts to reach Ogle — a career and technical health occupations teacher at the school since 2014 and a district employee since 2005 — were unsuccessful early Tuesday.
She’s facing charges for a sex act with a student, indecent liberties with a student and crimes against nature, WLOS reports .
Ogle has been suspended with pay following her arrest, a school district spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday to The Post.
Ogle, whose bond was set at $10,000, was released from custody on Friday, jail records show.

A former Texas middle-school teacher who was impregnated by a 13-year-old student has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Alexandria Vera, 25, was facing up to 30 years behind bars after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child in November. She admitted to police that a relationship that started with Instagram messages between her and the boy blossomed into a romance — one that the boy’s family approved of.
A judge in the 209th District Court in Houston said during Vera’s sentencing hearing on Friday that he does not believe the former English teacher is a danger to children or a classic pedophile, the Houston Chronicle reported . But Judge Michael McSpadden said he wants to send a message to the community by giving Vera some prison time.
“We want our educators to teach our students,” McSpadden said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “We want them to keep their hands off students.”
Vera, an eighth-grade teacher at Stovall Middle School in Houston, was arrested in June and initially charged with continuous sexual assault of a child, which carries a maximum of life imprisonment. Her sentence was capped at 30 years after she pleaded guilty.
Vera told police that she met the boy during summer school in 2015. She said she initially resisted the boy’s advances until sometime last fall, when she agreed to hang out with her student.
Prosecutors say Vera and the teen had sex almost every day for nine months. She told investigators that they love each other, according to court documents. During the relationship, Vera told her neighbors that the boy was her brother, according to KHOU, a CBS affiliate .
Prosecutors say Vera groomed the child and his family, even moving the teen and his father into her home and pretending she was dating the father, the Houston Chronicle reported . She also bought groceries for the boy’s family and paid the phone bills.
“She has a history of straight-out deception,” Denise Nichols, a Harris County prosecutor, said in court.
Vera’s 6-year-old daughter knew about the relationship, even calling the 13-year-old “dad,” Nichols said.
A mental-health professional who works with sex offenders testified on Vera’s behalf. Karen Lawson said Vera grew up around domestic violence. She described the former teacher as someone with a “big heart” and a need to be loved, the Houston Chronicle reported.
“I think she was driven by being in love with him,” Lawson testified in court, according to the Houston Chronicle.
The investigation began after the school principal received a tip about Vera in early 2016. Vera told police she had gotten pregnant and had an abortion after Child Protective Services questioned her about the relationship in February, according to KTRK-TV, an ABC affiliate .
Vera probably will not spend her entire sentence in prison. She will be eligible for parole in five years, the Dallas Morning News reported .
