The technique is called private note investing. In general, a private note just means you're the lender instead of the owner of a real estate property. And in case you didn't notice, the names on many of the biggest and most expensive buildings in small towns and big cities around the world are lending institutions (i.e. banks)! It's no accident.

Just write your note, and you'll get a link. Then you copy and paste that link into an email (or instant message) that you send to the person who you want to read the note. When that person clicks the link for the first time, they will see the note in their browser and the note will automatically self-destruct; which means no one (even that very same person) can read the note again.

You can also add a reference to identify each note. The recipient can copy and paste the note, so it doesn't actually self-destruct, right? Right. But, then again, you couldn't prevent the recipient from taking a screen capture or even memorizing the note. That's why Privnote doesn't try to protect the note contents from being copied.

Private Notes gives you safe and fully encrypted place for your Top Secret notes!
Private Notes is ideal for storing the most sensitive information like Recovery codes, Wi-Fi passwords, server configs, etc...
Privacy and permissions:
- There are no permissions - this extension can't make any remote requests or submit any data!
- This extension is NOT using own cloud servers, data are synchronized by "Chrome Sync" engine (encrypted).
- Your password is NOT stored at all. It's hashed using advanced PBKDF2 function with 100k iterations and strong salt.
- Unlocked notes and decryption keys are never stored - they are only kept in the system memory.
- Even if someone gains physical access to your PC, he won't be able to access your notes nor password. This is one of the safest place ever created!
Top features:
- Encrypted notes - all your notes are always stored encrypted!
- Automatic backups - each device creates encrypted local backups of your notes (plus "Chrome Sync" holds a backup)
- No need to create additional account - Chrome Sync will handle everything
- Advanced Text Editor - supports many advanced text features
- Code highlight for many popular languages and configs
- Compression - all notes are compressed to save space
- Auto-lock - will help you keep your notes locked when you leave your PC
- No Ads!
Worst case scenarios:
- Someone hacks into Google database:
- no problem, all user data should be stored encrypted by Chrome Sync engine. Brute force attack is practically impossible. And even after that, the data are still encrypted by extension!
- Someone stoles your PC and can read whole drive:
- your data are stored encrypted by extension. Brute force attack may be possible if you used weak password! Prefer longer password over short and complicated. Strong passwords are practically impossible to crack.
- Someone hacks into my 2FA protected account (Juraj, author of this extension) and releases a new updated version with host permission that will send data to an attacker server after you unlock your notes:
- extensions cannot add host permissions without explicit user approval. You would see a message from Chrome saying that "Private Notes has been updated but to install it, you need to approve the new permission: "Access your data for www. attacker_evil_domain .com"". My updates will never request new permissions.
Limitations of Chrome Sync engine:
- Chrome Sync can handle only 100KB of data - so you can't store huge notes. However thanks to build in compression, you should be able to store more than 100,000 characters of text.
- Single note only 8KB size limit - each note can have only up to 8,000 characters - again thanks to compression this should be more.

This extension is amazing! Very helpful, simple, and easy to manage! A little color customization could happen? Very functional and cool! Thanks so much Juraj!
Hello Sara,
I will add a proper theme options in the next release 3.9.
You are not the fist one unhappy about my purple color :).
Have a nice day :)
Best regards,
Juraj Mäsiar
Chrome sync works, nice! Translations, check. Simple enough to use, check. Maybe gui color adjustment would help to feel completely at home. Looking forward to using it more often.
This is a very useful add-on for taking notes, the best for that purpose I've come across so far. Easy and convenient to use, you can just click on the extension and start writing right away. The app seems secure and reliable and it does not randomly erase notes without explanation as I've had happen to me on some other note-taking apps. There are no adds. The developer also does a good job of explaining how the program works to the users and is also very helpful with queries one might have and responds to messages quickly.
There isn't anything in particular to be improved in my opinion, apart from maybe adding more options at the top such as more fonts, and the repairing link and Tx functions, which do not seem to work in the version I'm using.
Just note that if one of your notes suddenly lock and cannot be unlocked with the password as what happened to me once, simply go to the backup function and restore the backup at some previous time to recover your notes.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the the current 3.2 version of this add-on.
i honestly just needed a place to write my diary xD and i needed something simple yet with a couple of features and private notes has it all. it'll be cool to add more features like being able to add photos and some colors for the notes but otherwise its a pretty good app if you need something simple and private. a+ for security too. just note that you can only have much storage since its only a chrome extension.
Seems initially ok. Hard to change font size, unless zoom the whole page, as a separate browser window. It's not too clear how the sync works, or where the notes are being stored. If I clear my browser's cache, does that also clear/delete my notes?
Thanks, for your reply. I have noticed what could be an annoying bug now too.
I have logged out of the program, the day before, but the next day, the program opens itself automatically in a tab, and if I ignore this, it then opens another tab, so I have after a while multiple tabs, from your program, all asking me to log in to the program with my password.
Hello Steve,
The new version 3.0 was just released and it brings many improvements including the missing font size.
I've also fixed the annoying bug with multiple tabs being opened. It should open now only one.
Note that it is asking you to re-enter your password to help you remember it. It will do it less and less often and then only once a month so that you don't forget your password. Because if you do, there is no recovery!
The full change-log can be found here:

Have a nice weekend :)

Hello Steve,
Thanks for pointing this out. I will try to fix the editor so that it's easier to use. I've created issue here:
https://github.com/fastaddons/PrivateNotes/issues/8
Regarding the storage - the notes are stored in Chrome internal storage so user is not able to clear it. So clearing cache / cookies / history will not affect your notes. Further, if you are logged in your Google account in your Chrome, your notes are automatically backed up to the Google cloud. So even if your PC breaks, your notes will be still in the cloud and once you login on a new device, it will synchronize back.
Additionally you can always export your notes to a file for "manual" backup.
And as always, everything is encrypted so not even Google can access your notes.
Thank you for the feedback and have a nice week :)
Best regards,
Juraj Mäsiar
This is one of my every-day use extensions. It help me a lot to keep track with the stuff that I have to do. I also like the fact that I can use the same extension on different devices and it syncs automatically!!. Feature wise it may not be the best but overall good extension.

Hi, I have a question Is this extension open-source because in order to trust an extension with sensitive data it should be open source

Hello again,
There is no data collection :). Everything you enter is encrypted and stored in the browser special "sync storage" area. Browser automatically synchronizes everything in this area with your other browsers where you are logged in in the same Google account. That's the only way your data can leave your browser.
But in general yes, every extension that wants to send any data needs permission for the host where it's sending the data (or permission to access all hosts). So when you are installing extension you will get a popup that will tell you what hosts can extension access. In Chrome you can also mange this afterwards when you right click the extension icon and select "Manage extensions".
Regarding open source - I can't tell. I'm full time extension developer for several years now and my income from it is extremely low (less than 200$ per month!). So making things open source would not solve the issue, maybe a little bit if I combine it with "Open collective" and some Kickstarter maybe? The other option is that most of my extensions will become payed. I'm planning this experiment in the new Safari Extensions store for Apple platform. So as you can see, it's not easy to be extension developer.
I actually don't know how the data is collected from an extension. So according your reply does an extension need a host permission in order to send the collected transfer data? And one more thing are you planning to make this open source or will this always be closed source.
