One of the most iconic characters from Overwatch. Widow stands out as one of the game's best.
Most shooters have some form of hero with a sniper or a stand-alone weapon that people can use. Overwatch is not an exception because the game has a hero called Widow. Although some people also add Hanzo to the list of snipers, Widow is the “real one”.
Since snipers are popular, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that Widow is one of the most famous heroes in Overwatch. Unfortunately, mastering her takes time, so lower-MMR players rarely utilize her to her full potential.
Despite the fact that every other hero can do some damage and help their team.Widow falls into the category of easy to learn, hard to master. People who don’t know what to do or how to position themselves won’t be able to do much. Hence, many players are unhappy when they see someone from their team picking Widow.
Hopefully, the things you can read here will give you an overall idea of what to expect from the hero and how to learn what it’s capable of. Get all the details in our Overwatch Widow Guide.
Every hero in Overwatch needs to have a good position to make a difference. This is especially true for Widow because the sniper needs to stay somewhere where she can hit her shots and hide when needed.
Although Grappling Hook allows her to escape (in some situations), you can’t always rely on this ability. Especially if you are in a bad position. You have to be familiar with every map and know where to go in order to make the most of it. Widow is usually great when you have to defend something. However, the hero can also be used offensively.
One of the easiest ways to learn where you need to stay is by watching videos or streams of professional players. There are loads of options to choose from, so make sure to watch at least a few people.
Many of you have probably seen some of the best Widow players that do things, such as trick shots. Although those things seem impressive, landing them is easier said than done, even for experienced players. That’s why it is better to focus on landing the easy shots as much as possible before focusing on something more complicated.
The only way to become a better player is to use the hero as much as possible. Besides playing competitively or with your friends, you can also practice against AI. Especially if you want to land as many headshots as possible. This is one of the most important things when playing with Widow. Headshots allow you to kill most of your targets instantly.
Playing with the hero as much as possible is usually a recipe for success. Playing against AI will allow you to learn the basics, but once you start facing real people, you will also learn how to cope with the pressure. The latter is one of the big problems for many Widow players because they are pressured to perform at a certain level.

Many heroes in Overwatch are great at flanking because they are able to kill multiple heroes quickly. Sadly, Widow is not one of the best flankers out there. Since the hero is not as mobile as some other flankers in the game, she can die in a matter of seconds. To prevent this from happening, Widow players must be very careful when pushing and should only do it if it is safe.
In the best-case scenario, you move behind your opponents, kill a few of them and go to a safe sport. Don’t forget that Widow is good only if you can remain unnoticed. Once your opponents know you’re there, you should go to a different location.
As mentioned earlier, positioning is everything when it comes to Widow. Some maps are better than others, where you can, however, try taking advantage of the high ground. This can give you a good overview of the battlefield, and help you land some quick kills.
Since you are a Sniper, only a few heroes in the game can kill you from a distance. Aside from Widow, we have to mention Hanzo and Cassidy. The Widow vs Widow match is tricky, and it usually comes down to patience and skills. However, you have more range than Hanzo and Cassidy, so you should use it to your advantage.
Speaking of high grounds, this is one of the ways that will help you avoid some of the heroes that will actively try to kill you. Sure, Genji and Tracer can eventually catch you, but you can use your hook to escape.
One of the more advanced things you need to learn when playing with Widow is when to shoot. Unlike other sniper heroes or weapons in other games. Widow can’t just zoom in and shoot right away because this won’t do that much damage.
Once you press your zoom, your shot’s power starts charging. The higher it is, the more damage you will do. However, this doesn’t mean you have to wait until your weapon fully charges to fire at someone. In fact, once you pass the 60% range, almost any DPS target will die if you land a headshot. This means that you don’t need to charge your shot to 100% unless you want to break a shield or kill a tank whose current HP is over 250.
Learning how to use this technique will take time, but you will become much stronger once you get used to it. This is especially true in situations where you have to face another Widow.

Widowmaker is a playable character appearing in the 2016 video game Overwatch , developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment . The character is of French origin; her real name is Amélie Lacroix ( née Guillard). [3]

Widowmaker was first introduced at BlizzCon 2014, where her character was first noted to be a sniper and lightly armored assassin. [4] She is based on one of the classes for Crossroads , an idea tossed around by the former Titan team before they settled on working on Overwatch . [5]

Widowmaker was noted to be equipped with a grappling hook and the ability to see through walls. [4] In November 2015, a patch was implemented to tone down Widowmaker's ultimate ability—"Infra-Sight"—as Blizzard continued its goal to keep the characters on Overwatch' s roster balanced. [6] The patch made it so that the player would not be able to have Widowmaker's ultimate charge up while Infra-Sight was active. [6]

Her character is voiced by Chloé Hollings in the game's English and French versions. [1] Some of her dialogue in the game's English version is spoken in French. [7] Widowmaker is noted to have blue skin due to covert training in which her physiology altered to slow her heart, effectively turning her skin the color seen in-game. A "Noire" skin for the character was included on pre-ordered versions of the game. [8]

In 2021, Blizzard showcased Widowmaker's updated design for Overwatch 2 ; the developers went for a more " cyberpunk " feel, with the character seen sporting a braid and new armor plating. [9]

Widowmaker's role in Overwatch is on defense. [10] Her defensive nature is reflected in her sniper classification, allowing her to be well utilized from a distance; [11] VG247 called her a "classic sniper." [10] Widowmaker comes equipped with the "Widow's Kiss": a rifle with two modes. [10] Firing without aiming causes the rifle to function as close-to-medium assault rifle which is stronger than her scope. Aiming through her scope triggers the weapon to function as a long-range sniper rifle, that can eliminate many other characters with a critical hit. [12] She also comes equipped with her Grappling Hook ability, allowing her to readjust her position and reach heights that other characters cannot. [10] [13] In addition, her "Venom Mine" is a small explosive that sticks to a surface and releases toxic gas when enemies wander into its area. While the poison is active, Widowmaker can see the affected enemy through obstacles, similar to her ultimate. Finally, her ultimate ability, Infra-Sight, allows Widowmaker and her teammates to see through obstacles to locate enemies. [10] Her ultimate ability is able to be used to counter enemy flankers. [13]

Widowmaker's fictional biography details her real name: Amélie Lacroix (born Amélie Guillard), age: 33, and base of operations: Annecy , France . [14] In Overwatch lore, her former life included her marriage to Gérard Lacroix, an Overwatch agent leading operations against Talon, a terrorist organization, and her former occupation as a ballerina . Talon opted to kidnap Amélie after several failed attempts to kill Gérard. After kidnapping Amélie, Talon subjected her to an intensive neural reconditioning program, breaking her will and reprogramming her as a sleeper agent for Talon. Sometime after this, she was found by Overwatch agents, seemingly unaffected by Talon's methods. Two weeks after returning to her normal life, she killed Gérard in his sleep, and returned to Talon, where she was fully converted into one of their agents. The extensive training she underwent caused her physiology to change, dramatically slowing her heart, lowering the temperature of her skin, and turning her skin a blue color. [14] Now, her character is noted to be numb to human emotion. [14]

Widowmaker appears in Alive , the second in an eight-part series of Overwatch animated shorts . [15] The short is set in London's King's Row, which also the setting for a map in the game. [16] Widowmaker's in-game abilities are also featured in the short. [17] In the short, Widowmaker is featured on a rooftop plotting to assassinate Tekhartha Mondatta, the head of the Shambali, an in-universe group of omnics formed to bring peace between omnics and humans. She is confronted by former Overwatch agent Tracer , who engages in a rooftop battle with her; however, Tracer is unsuccessful in her attempts to foil Widowmaker. In addition to successfully assassinating Mondatta, Widowmaker also damages Tracer's chronal accelerator, which allows Tracer to maintain her physical form in the present time. [15] [16]

In Heroes of the Storm , there is a Widowmaker skin for the playable character Nova , and vice versa – in Overwatch, there is a Nova skin for the playable character Widowmaker. [18] [19]

The character has received positive critical reception; she was labeled a "classic sniper character" and "great defensive hero" by VG247 in their Overwatch hero guide, noting that she "works best in wide-open maps with long corridors". [10] Matt Whittaker of Hardcore Gamer wrote that "the traditional sniper hero of the bunch, Widowmaker is a particularly lethal character for those with solid keyboard and mouse skill, or those who are particularly great at sniping with a controller," but did not recommend her for players whom don't have a precise aim. [13] This sentiment was echoed by Kevin Thielenhaus of Gameranx , who noted that "[Widowmaker] requires skill, but even if you're new to online competitive FPS, she's powerful enough to help any team." [20] Additionally she was the most selected defensive-class character during Overwatch ' s beta period. [21]

Dean James of Attack of the Fanboy found Widowmaker to be one of the strongest characters in the game, [22] Widowmaker has also been noted to be one of the most popular Overwatch characters; she was the most selected defense-class hero in the game during its open beta. [23] Matt Kim of Inverse labelled Widowmaker as a "fan favorite" character. [24] Her popularity with fans has led to Ben Bertoli of Kotaku calling her one of the most overused heroes. [25] In a "Clueless Gamer" segment of Conan featuring Game of Thrones actors Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey , Overwatch was played, with Dinklage, Headey, and host Conan O'Brien all choosing Widowmaker. [26] Her prevalence was also noted by Paul Tamburro of CraveOnline , whom complained that "In Overwatch you are sometimes greeted by more than one of these players per match, all assuming the role of Widowmaker, all standing on some ledge in the distance and all doing absolutely nothing to help you and your teammates push towards victory" in a list of the "10 Overwatch Problems That All Players Will Face." [27]

Paste magazine's Suriel Vazquez ranked Widowmaker 6th out of Overwatch ' s 21 characters on her "How Many Times They Made Me Yell 'Bullshit!'" list, expressing that "dealing with her is more frustrating than it should be." [28] Will Greenwald of PC Magazine noted that Widowmaker was one of his five favorite characters to play with, writing "Bastion and Widowmaker gave me the ability to cover choke points at both short/medium and long range." [29]

Overwatch characters have also become frequent subjects to cosplay as, with a Widowmaker cosplay by Russian cosplayer Jannet "Incosplay" Vinogradova receiving praise from Hayley Williams of Kotaku , whom wrote that "This Russian cosplayer is taking the world by storm, with a cosplay of Widowmaker [...] that looks like it could have been ripped out of the game itself." [30] Chris Jager of Lifehacker Australia similarly called her effort "the perfect Widowmaker cosplay" and "probably the best." [31] Overwatch ' s release saw large amounts of fan-made pornography featuring its characters being produced; "Overwatch" related searches boosted by 817% on Pornhub after the game's open beta went live, with "the most popular characters [featured being] Tracer and Widowmaker." [32] Tech Times remarked that "Widowmaker, by far, is the most traditionally sexy character in Overwatch . She's slim, tall, fit and wears high heels. Her outfit
