For the most part, tribal identities have been lost through the generations, and the majority of Jews do not know which tribe they are from.
There are a number of people whose families have passed down their identity as Kohanim (Priests) or Levites , which means they descend from the tribe of Levi . There are also a handful of non-Levite families who can trace their ancestry to a particular tribe, but these are few and far between.
When the Messiah comes, we will all find out which tribes we are from. So if this bit of information is important to you, do your best to hasten his arrival! For more on that, check out our Moshiach and the Future Redemption section.
But how will you know if the messiah has come without knowing that he is from the tribe of Judah?

My name is George Levi, could i b a descended from the levites tribe?

Maybe but not quite. When you check your history, see if it was in the Levant since longer than 2,000 years. If you discover that your history was mostly centered in Germany, Eastern Europe, Mediterranean or northern Europe, that you'll be descended from a people that were converted at or about the 7th century but not earlier than the Hellenistic period.

That’s not really true at all. If you look at recent statistical studies examining the questions of, when was the most recent common ancestor of every member of a population, and when was the most recent time at which every person then living is either a common ancestor of all the members of the population alive today, or else has no living descendents, the results become very interesting. They strongly suggest that either everyone alive today (except, perhaps, the members of the most isolated populations) is descended from Abraham (and so for all of his children and their children), or no one is!

I uploaded to Genomelink and was not disappointed. I confirmed my family is Hispanic Jewish, originally from the Levant. If you have done genetic testing with the various commercial DNA companies like 23andMe and Ancestry, all you need to do is download your raw data then you can upload to Genomelink. Similar to GEDmatch. I did purchase the Global test and it shows significant amount of Near Eastern and Western Asian among the European. I purchased the European test, and among others the test showed Iberian-Italian, it also showed Hispanic Jew (Sephardic Jewish) and Central European Jewish (Ashkenazi Jewish). A very helpful genetic testing company I think so far and I have done a few. I hope this helps.

Manhein is a surname in my family tree. I am 6.25% Ashkenazi, so my great great grandfather, Jonas Manhein, was 100%. Would his family have taken the name from the Tribe of Menasseh, House of Joseph? He immigrated to America from Prussia.

On my mothers side including my mother all are 99% Ashkenazi (by DNA), with names of Linz, Rosenthal and Kulchinsky. I was told my mothers grandparents came to the US from Latvia(Riga)/Poland/White Russia during the Pogroms of 1900's and settled in Bosten and Marblehead Massachusetts and Brooklyn, NY. I am 50% Ashkenazi, and grew up in California, so I don't know much about them, my mother is not a practicing Jew though she grew up in Marblehead and went to Hebrew school as a child. She then married my Gentile father in 1970 whose family was Protestant from upstate NY. So I was raised without any religion out in California and don't know much about it, although a good majority of my Moms friends in California are of Jewish ancestry. Am I even a Jew? I am not sure since I only grew up with a few cultural things from my mom and grandparents that were Jewish, mostly the food and all their friends who were Jewish but not religious Jewish.

I believe the Orthodox would consider you a Jew because you have a Jewish mother. It does not matter whether you practice or believe. You would not have to convert; just study and learn what was not instilled in you through your family.

Levites are mostly the ones you might be able to tell by their name and tribe For instance Cohan comes from kohanim Levinson Levy Levin Ect ect for Levite This tribe wanted names that would signify that they were from the levites Most Jewish names were made up when the governments of those certain countries enforced a last name. So there would be no way of knowing using a last name to place you with a tribe

Just came across this article about Israelite ancestry. I do know my family has a bloodline to one of the 12 tribes but I cannot figure out which one for sure. I have searched my last name "Suarez" which translates to Zu Haarets (Jews that were exiled and migrated to the Iberian Peninsula and then to the Dominican Republic which is my families native country.) If anyone knows additional information as to which tribe the Zu Haarets are from please feel free to comment!

I grew up with an Orlando Suarez in school, although I didn't know him well. Southern Calif. I have no idea how common that surname is. Wikipedia has this: Suárez is a common Spanish surname, widely spread throughout Latin America as a consequence of colonization. In origin it is a patronymic meaning "son of Suero" or "son of Soeiro". It is derived from the Latin name Suerius, meaning “Sugarman”.

Something went wrong. Wait a moment and try again.
You’re not an Israelite. You are a Christian. I knew instantly, from the question. Christians are the only ones who keep asking obsessively about Israelite tribes. You never hear Jews fussing over that issue. Just Christians.
How about telling us why? What is it that keeps eating away at some Christians concerning Jewish tribes? Even one evangelist at my door wanted more than anything to know “What tribe are you?” What is going on with you?

I mean, besides the fact that you personally repeatedly post bizarre antisemitic slurs, such as your claim that Jews and Muslims “curse Christians” three times a day and your other lying, racist hate claim that the “Talmud is full of hate for non Jews and especially Christians.” You promote an agenda of anti-Semitic Christian hate.
None. It is a myth that all Jews are biologically descended from one or another Hebrew tribe. Aside from thousands of intermarriages over two thousand years, the early Hebrews probably never divided up into those distinct tribes the mythologists are so fond of talking about. It’s just a pretty story.
