Standard Door Frame Size

The standard dimensions of a door frame often depend on the area and the construction practices followed in that area. In the United States, the most common standard sizes for door frames are:

  • Width: The standard width of a door frame is usually 2 ⅜ inches (about 6 cm) or 2 ¾ inches (about 7 cm). These sizes are commonly used for interior door frames.
  • Height: The standard height of a door frame is usually 6 feet 8 inches (80 inches or about 203 centimeters).

However, door frames taller than 7 feet (84 inches or approx. 213 cm) or 8 feet (96 inches or approx. 244 cm) can also be used for specific applications or custom designs.

Standard Exterior Door Sizes

Exterior door dimensions are subject to the International Residence Code (IRC). According to IRC building codes, exterior doors must have a minimum height of 80 inches. Standard exterior door sizes are typically 3 feet wide and 80 inches high. Examples of exterior doors include front doors, back doors, garage doors, or fire/security doors. In newer homes, exterior doors can be even taller, with a door height of 96 inches. Standard exterior doors can be easily found in 30 inch and 32 inch widths, and standard exterior door thicknesses are 1 ¾ inch. For sliding doors or sliding glass doors, the standard width and height may be different. You'll find these doors average 80 inches tall and 6 feet wide, but there's a wide range of doors available to suit your needs, from 60 inches to 96 inches.

How to Measure a Door?

Before you can replace a door in your home or building, you must measure the width, height, and thickness of your existing door to get the right size for your replacement door. If you are replacing your existing door with a panel rather than a pre-hang, these are all the measurements you need to choose the correct size. Remember that the door measurement only includes the doorway, not the frame or opening.

Measure your door from top to bottom for door height, left to right for door width, then measure door depth to determine replacement material thickness. If you have a door that won't fit into your frame or if you have a frame without a door, you can measure the door jamb to determine the door size you need. Find the width of the door jamb by measuring the top, middle, and bottom of the inside of the frame, and find the height of the door jamb by measuring from floor to top. The girder thickness can be found by measuring the beam between the stops and the back.
