Standard Door Width

Standard door widths can vary, as there are many door sizes and styles. But the standard general door width for US homes is 36 inches. Other sizes that are easy to find are 30 and 32 inches. Note that when measuring the width of a door, the measurement only reflects the door panel, not the frame surrounding it.

Doors can be the centerpiece of your home. They offer more than just a way to get in and out of a room or house. The right front door can improve the exterior appeal as well as the overall look and aesthetics of your entire home. But before getting into style and style, you need to talk about size. Understanding the dimensions you need is the first step to getting the perfect doors for every entry into your home.

What Is the Standard Door Size?

Standard door sizes may vary depending on the region and intended use of the door. However, I can provide you with some standard door sizes commonly used for residential purposes in the US. These dimensions are commonly used for interior doors:

  • Single Door: The most common standard size for an interior door is 30 inches wide x 80 inches high (30" x 80"). This is commonly used for bedrooms, bathrooms, and other rooms in the house.
  • Double doors (French doors): For a pair of center-opening doors, the standard size is 60 inches wide x 80 inches high (60" x 80").
  • Patio doors: are often used for entrances to courtyards, balconies or as partitions between rooms.

It is important to note that these dimensions are considered standard, but there may be variations based on specific construction requirements or personal preference.

In addition, exterior doors, such as entry doors, can have different standard sizes due to factors such as security and insulation requirements.

Why Is Door Size Important?

The size of the door is important because you need to be able to easily pass through the door and in and out of several mobile devices. The Fair Housing Act recommends a minimum door size of 32 inches for easy access to your home. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the standard door size must be 36 inches for safe movement of people with disabilities. But door widths vary from 18 inches to 42 inches and even more depending on the purpose and need. The height of the door is usually kept at 80 inches, but in some cases the height of the design can be increased or decreased.

What Are the Standard Door Frames and Door Frame Sizes?

The door frame is a frame structure that supports the door. Door loads are transferred to the building or structure through the door frame. Door frames can be made of different materials like wood, granite, etc. The main function of the door frame is to support the door. The door is hinged to the door frame and it is also locked by the door frame. The door frame is wider and longer than the door. Door frames are made of wood or other material 2 inches to 4 inches thick. So, to get the length of the door frame, we need to add the thickness of the door frame on both sides with the size of the doorway.

The vertical part of the door frame is called the beam or post. While the upper horizontal part connecting the two pins is called the head.

Therefore,

  • Door Frame Width = door frame thickness on both sides + door size
  • Door Frame Length = Door Frame Thickness + Door Length
