When it comes to anal play, there's no such thing as too much lube.
Lube is great for taking the friction out of all kinds of sex, but when it comes to anal sex , lube is absolutely essential. Unlike the vagina, the anus doesn't self-lubricate when you're turned on, which makes it difficult and painful to insert anything—from a pinky finger to a penis—without some extra help.
But which lube works best for anal sex? There are sooo many different personal lubricant products on the market, but when it comes to anal sex, you want to use thicker lube that doesn't require constant reapplication, explains Alicia Sinclair, founder of sex toy brand b-Vibe . "Silicone lube is one of the best lubes for anal because it contains dimethicone, dimethiconol, and cyclomethicone," she explains. "This creates a consistency that is thicker and more 'buttery' than water-based lubes . Most people find that they prefer a thicker lubricant for anal play because it gives some extra cushion to protect delicate body parts."
While natural oils (like coconut oil ) and oil-based lubes have a thick consistency, too, they can erode latex, which is why Sinclair says: "It’s best to only use coconut oil or almond oil when condoms aren’t involved." But be careful about using silicone-based lubes with sex toys, she adds. "Using silicone lube on a silicone sex toy can cause bending, warping, and the ruin of a toy. Use a high-quality, water-based lubricant instead."
When it comes time to whip out the lube for anal sex, use as much as the receiving partner needs to feel comfortable, says Dr. Zhana Vrangalova , Ph.D., NYU professor of human sexuality and a sexpert for LELO . "Usually, especially for beginners, the more the better," she says. "I generally subscribe to the 'too much lube is almost enough' view when it comes to anal sex."
Don't be afraid to reapply "as soon as it seems like it's drying out and there's more friction," Vrangalova adds. "Keep the lines of communication with the receptive partner open. Encourage them to let you know when they feel more is necessary."
You'll notice the majority of lubricants on the list are silicone-based—the rest are either hybrids (meaning they're water- and silicone-based), or specific creams for anal stretching (i.e. fisting). FYI, the hybrids we included are safe for toy use and have a thicker consistency, which make them ideal for anal penetration.
Here are the 19 best lubes for anal sex.
HOWL is a UK-based, queer-owned company that has CBD in the lube , which helps to alleviate any pain the bottom (anal receptive partner) may experience during sex. It's also QUITE thick for those who like it extra wet.
There's something about the texture of Goodparts' lube that feels so damn good. It's silky smooth and makes everything extra slippery.
Momentum's silicone lube is vegan, fragrance-free, pH-balanced, paraben-free, glycerine-free, and made in the United States. It's non-sticky, and unlike other silicone lubes, washes off pretty easily.
Pjur is well-known in Europe—a little less so in the States—but its Backdoor Silicone Lubricant is by far one of the best lubes for anal sex. It has a smooth texture and is far less sticky than other silicone lubes on the market.
You'll notice a lot of silicone-based lubes on this list because they are thicker and last longer, but coconut-based lube is another solid option. As I previously wrote when describing this lube: "[It] starts a little firmer when you apply, but as you start to have sex and things heat up, both literally and metaphorically, it melts and slips everywhere (in the best of ways). It's also great to use if you like eating ass with lube (or take breaks from anal penetration to eat ass) because it has a fabulous coconut oil taste."
Most people like thicker lube when having anal sex, but if you're someone who likes thinner, lighter lube while having anal, P.S. Condom's organic aloe, plant-based lube is a great option.
Coconu is actually the first USDA-Certified organic, coconut oil-based lubricant. As an oil, you shouldn't use it with latex condoms, as the condoms are more likely to tear. If you're not using condoms, then we highly recommend using this lube. It's super slippery, non-sticky, and a little bit goes a long way.
Promescent lube is great for folks who are cautious about the ingredients in their lube. It's 100% paraben-free, odorless, colorless, and greaseless. It manages to be thick without feeling too sticky.
This is one of the few water-based lubes we recommend for anal sex. Because it is more of a "jelly," with a thicker consistency, it still works fabulously for anal sex.
Try this water-based lube from Lovehoney if you're playing with silicone sex toys and don't want them to get warped. "For the smoothest experience, I recommend applying along the full shaft of the toy, around the opening of the anus on the outside, and also a bit on the inside of the anus with your fingers," Vrangalova says.
Gun Oil has been a favorite lube for gay men for years. This silicone lube has a thick, viscous consistency; using a little can go a long way.
It's no surprise that one of the best condom companies in the world would also produce one of the best silicone lubes. As the tagline states, Skyn's personal lubricant is extra long lasting. You don't need to stop the action to reapply.
Boy Butter is another great lube for anal sex. However, it's oil-based, meaning it's not safe to use with latex condoms.
There's nothing special about Swiss Navy Silicone Lubricant. It's your run-of-the-mill anal sex lube. That said, it's often cheaper than other lubes, and it always gets the job done.
For the love of God, the product is called "Invade Deep Fisting Cream." Of course it's great to use for anal sex. It's even better to use if you want to put a little something more up inside there.
A hybrid lube that's both water and silicone-based, Sliquid Naturals Silk can still be used on most toys. (Most of the other lubes on the list are solely silicone-based, and for that reason, not to be used in conjunction with toys.) That's why Sliquid is ideal for pegging or any anal play that involves toys.
We're not gonna lie, Spunk looks kinda like semen, which could be a turn-on if you're into that. It's neither sticky nor tacky (due to being a hybrid). And after use, it leaves your skin feeling silky smooth.
Undoubtedly one of the, if not the thinnest silicone lubes on the market, this product has the consistency of water-based lubricant, but lasts the same duration as a silicone-based lubricant. It also feels like you're not wearing lube (but in a good way—not a painful way).
This cream has been helping people do butt stuff since 1979. Head's up that it's oil-based, so don't use it if you're depending on condoms.

Crisco is very good i'm a girl and tested it Thank you all :D

Soap is not toxic once in your intestines. Think do you wash your butt everyday? someday soap is bound to get it. Were you ever punished and your parents put a bar of soap in your mouth? if soap was toxic and could mess with your intestines there would be no way parents would be sticking bars of soap in children s mouths.

Use plain eye gel with no fragrance; Boots sell 15ml for £1.49.

Just use vegetable oil. No irritation, very nice and lasts a good time, and perfect for bootay play. A little messy to clean up though as water doesn't bond with oil.

do lotions work like vasaline lotions?????

and if they do are there any lotions that work ?

hi ive not used olive oil my self but ive heard it irritates you after you have finished.

Hey, hon. Totally in the same situation. What I've discovered works BEST is baby oil. However, if you can't get it, sneak a little Olive Oil. I use it for anal sex and anal masturbation, and it works very well. I personally have experienced no burn when using it. Of course, water-based lube is best, but since you, like myself, are under the careful eye of your parental units, it's extremely hard to get it without questions being raised.

Have fun! :D

ok ummmm... what if u used like aloe vera ive been told that works

i have a question...is glaxalbase ok to play alone??

ok take it from someone with experience in anal play. i've tried many many lube subtitutes so it's safe to say that i know what works and what doesn't,but each person is different so,try a lil on first and see how it feels. Baby oil sucks,it's way too thin and it wears off fast. No olive oil either,it mildly irritates ur anus,or minexd plus it's expensive. and don't try any kinds of body/hand lotions either, they're way more irritating than olive oil >.< leaves ur end feeling very uncomfortable. i think your best option would be aloe vera gel. that's what i'm using anyway, look for ones that say 100% gel, well they're technically not 100% gel cuz they hav extra ingredients like stabilizing agents but i don't see the difference at all. it's easy to wash and it feels like regular lube and they come in really small bottles too with an affordable price. plus they're multi-purpose. u can use em for burns or as a hair gel,to soothe acne marks or just as a moisturizer even as a shaving cream substitute! awesome eh. it's so low profile u can even ask your parents to get em for u ;) hope i helped.

In terms of a sexual lubricant the best and safest substance to use is a lubricant that is water soluable. Any oils, vaseline, soaps, etc. are not easily removed from your ssensitive anal tissue or rectum. Also these materials may cause allergic reactions that are very unpleasant and may require a trip to the ER. Remember that what ever you use as a lubricant on your anuss will reach your rectum and in some cases your large bowel. The large bowel will absorb some liquids. A water soluable liquid is easily cleaned or will be naturally and easily discarded by your excretory system. They also are replinishable during your sex act in copious amounts for comfort. If one is going to engage in any anaal sex activity, it is best to be safe and use the best personal sexual hygiene. Also avoid any lubricant that deadens the discomfort of anal sex. Pain is the best indicator that you should stop or at least slow down. The same rule applies to lubes with flavors and scents in them. You may be allergic to the added ingredient without knowing until it is inside your rectum. (Here I speak from experience!) You can purchase KY or Astrolube at WalMart, Walgreens for less money than baby oil and olive oil. The bottom line is oils are an irritant to internal tissue. It cannot be compared to your outside skin since it it exposed to nature and has an extra layer. Use caution with lubes other than water soluables and use good sense.
