Severe Storms Batter Western Tennessee, Causing Widespread Damage

Jackson, TN – April 7, 2025 – A powerful storm system swept through Western Tennessee overnight, unleashing torrential rains, damaging winds, and multiple tornadoes that left a trail of destruction across several counties. Emergency crews are assessing the damage as residents begin the difficult task of recovery.

Destructive Winds and Tornadoes Reported

The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed at least two tornadoes touched down in the region, with one near Jackson causing significant structural damage to homes and businesses. Wind gusts exceeding 70 mph uprooted trees, downed power lines, and damaged roofs in Hardeman, Madison, and Haywood counties.

'It sounded like a freight train coming through,' said Martha Reeves, a resident of Brownsville, where a suspected tornado ripped through a neighborhood. 'We barely made it to the basement in time.'

Power Outages and Emergency Response

At the storm’s peak, more than 30,000 customers were without electricity, according to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Utility crews are working to restore power, but officials warn that some areas may remain in the dark for days due to the extent of the damage.

Local emergency management agencies have opened shelters in Jackson and Covington for displaced residents. Red Cross volunteers are providing food, water, and medical assistance to those affected.

Flooding Complicates Recovery Efforts

Heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving over 5 inches, led to flash flooding, particularly near the Hatchie River. Several roads were submerged, stranding motorists and delaying first responders. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is urging drivers to avoid flooded roadways.

Officials Urge Caution

Governor Bill Lee has declared a state of emergency for the impacted counties, freeing up state resources for recovery efforts. 'We are working closely with local officials to ensure everyone gets the help they need,' Lee said in a statement.

The NWS warns that additional storms may develop later in the week, raising concerns about further flooding and wind damage. Residents are advised to stay weather-aware and heed evacuation orders if necessary.
