WBIR Weather Team Accurately Predicts Rare Summer Snowfall in East Tennessee

Knoxville, TN – June 10, 2024 – In a weather event that left many East Tennesseans stunned, WBIR’s meteorology team successfully forecasted a highly unusual summer snowfall that blanketed parts of the Great Smoky Mountains early this morning.

The WBIR Weather team, led by Chief Meteorologist Matt Hinkin, first detected the anomaly earlier this week when an unexpected cold front collided with unusually moist air, creating conditions ripe for snow—even in June. While many initially dismissed the possibility, WBIR’s advanced forecasting models and team of experts stood by their prediction.

'This is a once-in-a-lifetime event,' said Hinkin. 'We knew it was a long shot, but all the data pointed toward this rare phenomenon. We’re proud that our viewers were prepared thanks to our early warnings.'

Residents and tourists in higher elevations, including Gatlinburg and Newfound Gap, woke up to a light dusting of snow, with some areas seeing up to an inch. Social media erupted with photos of snow-covered trails and summer wildflowers peeking through the frost.
