Vatican City Announces Groundbreaking Solar Energy Initiative to Become World’s First Carbon-Neutral Sovereign State

Vatican City, April 26, 2025 – In a historic move aligning with Pope Francis’ environmental advocacy, Vatican City has unveiled an ambitious plan to become the world’s first fully carbon-neutral sovereign state by 2030. The initiative, dubbed 'Laudato Si’ Energia', will see the world’s smallest independent nation powered entirely by renewable energy, with solar panels installed atop St. Peter’s Basilica and other key Vatican buildings.

The project, developed in collaboration with European green energy firms, will involve the installation of high-efficiency photovoltaic panels designed to blend seamlessly with the Vatican’s historic architecture. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, stated, 'This initiative reflects our commitment to care for our common home, as urged by Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si’. We hope to set an example for nations worldwide.'

In addition to solar energy, the Vatican plans to introduce electric vehicles for its security and transportation services, as well as a comprehensive recycling program. Experts estimate the project will reduce the city-state’s carbon emissions by 95% within five years, with the remaining offset through reforestation partnerships in Italy and Africa.

The announcement has drawn praise from environmental groups, with Greenpeace calling it 'a bold step forward in the fight against climate change.' If successful, Vatican City—home to just over 800 residents but visited by millions of pilgrims annually—could become a global model for sustainable urban planning.

Pope Francis is expected to bless the first phase of installations during a special ceremony next month, reaffirming the Vatican’s leadership in both spiritual and ecological stewardship.
