Local Hero Alejandro González Cancún Saves Stranded Tourists During Hurricane

Cancún, Mexico – October 12, 2024

In a heartwarming act of bravery, Alejandro González Cancún, a 34-year-old fishing guide, rescued a group of stranded tourists during Hurricane Karl’s devastating pass through the Yucatán Peninsula.

As the storm battered the coast with 120 mph winds and heavy flooding, six vacationers—including two children—were trapped in a flooded beachside rental home near Playa del Carmen. With emergency services overwhelmed, González, a lifelong Cancún resident, took matters into his own hands.

Using his small but sturdy fishing boat, González navigated through debris-filled streets and rising waters to reach the terrified group. 'I knew the area, and I knew they wouldn’t last long if the water kept rising,' he said. 'I couldn’t just wait.'

After two dangerous trips, González successfully transported all six tourists to a nearby shelter, where they were treated for minor injuries. 'He’s a hero,' said American tourist Melissa Carter, one of those rescued. 'Without him, I don’t know what would’ve happened to us.'

Local officials have praised González’s quick thinking and selflessness. Plans are already underway to honor him with a civic award. Meanwhile, González remains humble. 'This is my home,' he said. 'We take care of each other here.'

As Cancún begins recovery efforts, González’s story serves as a reminder of resilience and community spirit in the face of disaster.
