Utrecht police inspector Caes Heda leads a team looking into the disappearance of young women. Meanwhile his daughter, Truus, bored with University takes up a job with disgraced former police office Thijs Orman at his Private Detective Agency and finds herself looking for yet another missing girl, this time it's her bosses own daughter. At the Kroonstraat Police station the team Caes has put together look into the normal run of the mill cases and try to overcome the weather as much as the crime in the city as snow envelopes the streets of Utrecht. We meet twins Freddie and Maaike Meijer who patrol the streets together with colleagues Adrie and Danny. The team is made up by Madelon Verloet and man mountain Ernst Hougewood. Together they investigate car theft, street crime, assault and finally murder. We look at the everyday lives of the police involved, Caes still traumatised after his wifes early death and Truus falling for Maaike. Loading interface About the author. I was attracted to the book by the cover and the unique setting. Utrecht is in the central Netherlands and was considered a religious center for centuries. It has a medieval old town, canals, gothic cathedral of St. Martin and a 14th century bell tower. This series is set in present time. Young women are missing from the Universiteit and Hoofdinspector Caes Heda and his team are on the case. All the girls appear to have nothing in common other than not having family or friends that would raise the alarm at their disappearance. Which brings the police, Truus and Thijs all together to solve the disappearances. As capable as Truus believes herself to be, she unknowingly runs into the dangerous killer. Now Caes and his team have to find and save the girls, including his daughter. Will they find them alive? I did have difficulty at first getting into this story, but I am glad I persevered. There are I feel too many Dutch words used throughout the book to pull in the average reader. I found it authentic and interesting, but I did have to work at accepting this was how it was written. The missing girls and the murders all were paced well, which lead to a good thriller plot. One scene on each would have been enough, but it was repeated excessively. I felt there should have been more attention to the thriller plot and much less on their private lives. I enjoyed this introduction to a new, unique location and way of policing. The characters are fully fleshed out and the thriller plot was good. I just feel there is too much emphasis on scenes not necessary to the plot and it should be edited down to a novella with more focus. Check out my next review for Utrecht Rain because I believe it is a much more focused and polished thriller. J Fearnley. Good characterisation and an interesting plot make for a good read in this the first of the Utrecht novels from Jonathon Wilkins. The storyline was good enough to keep me going. Caes is the main detective but Truus, his daughter, and Maaike, one of his team, stood out as strongly and their personal thread was a lovely story in itself. Also how keeping fit, going to the gym is such a big part of their lives took up a fair part of the book. This might have been better if it had been given a little less space. Still, I think there was good reason to have both of these threads. The personal themes are as much a part of this book as is the investigation into three missing women. Which is a really good story, a good read and a hard hitting plot line. It was interesting to read about the way in which crime is investigated in Holland. Also, how the police work with outside agents — in this instance a Private Investigation Agency. The missing girls investigation is added to when there are two murders. One of the missing girls is found to be key to what was happening. It becomes even more personal to Caes when Truus gets caught up with the perpetrator. There is good pace to this storyline especially as it gets closer to being resolved. All in all an enjoyable read, set in a rather wintery Utrecht — as you know I do enjoy a little or indeed quite a lot of snow! Purchased — eBook of Utrecht Snow. A terrific story with interesting and engaging characters but is severely let down by the lack of editing and this would certainly put some readers off, as at points it comes across more as an early draft rather than a finished article. For example, as noted in other reviews there are a lot of repetitive sections where the author hammers home the emotional states of characters such as Truss and rather than empathise you want to shout 'I get it! Other than that the story suffers from the semi-frequent switching from third to first person, and the over use and sometimes unnecessary of Dutch wording which takes you out of the world rather than draw you in. A little goes a long way. There also some minor formatting and proofing issues too, but if all of these issues got sorted then I would happily give it another star. Overall, I enjoyed this book due to the characters and decent storyline but the above issues made it harder work than it needed to be. The P. Join the discussion. Can't find what you're looking for? During the week we had snow, early February, I was briefly in Utrecht and I managed to cycle and film two routes. One from the east to the railway station and one from the west to the railway station. Both routes were well cleared of snow and ice as you would expect from a city that wants to be a world class cycling city. I will mostly say things in the photo captions, but I will explain something about the undersurface heating of the bridge I pass in the second video. The Dafne Schippersbrug was built at the location of an older school. That school was in the way at the best location for a new bridge which was needed to reach a new part of the city. The on-ramp over the school was very susceptible to freezing and it became slippery before any other street in the city was icy. This was due to the location, the prevailing winds and the fact that these winds could cool the bridge deck from below. After the first winter in — in which police had to tell people to dismount for their own safety — the city decided in that this problem had to be solved for good. Undersurface heating of the cycleway was to be the solution. It seems like a missed opportunity that electric undersurface heating was chosen. Not a system with a heat pump or even a solar powered installation. It would have been cheaper had it been installed during the initial construction of the bridge. From which I deducted that it is not solar powered. This may seem like a lot of money but the cost to society of a lost life or injuries requiring hospitalisation are also considerable. In the Netherlands the societal cost of one life lost is on average 3 million euros and the cost of an injured person who has to be admitted to hospital is on average a little over , euro, according to an expert in a TV program. In that light this investment is not at all expensive. Fortunately, the system has also proven to work well. The bridge is no longer slippery and can be used safely. Enjoy the photos and the videos of these two rides in the snow in Utrecht. The first video with the ride from Wilhelminapark to Utrecht Central station. I really enjoyed this blogpost and especially both the videos as they were very interesting from several perspectives. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Learn how your comment data is processed. Skip to content During the week we had snow, early February, I was briefly in Utrecht and I managed to cycle and film two routes. The sharp turn left which the two cyclists in the distance are just about to take was dangerous because this part of the bridge could get so cold that it would become icy before any other place in Utrecht. Electric undersurface heating was installed to prevent this. That is why at this location the pedestrian space is now also snow and ice free. You can see this bridge in the second video. The water of the pond in the Utrecht Wilhelminapark was frozen over and many people had cycled there to go ice skating in the sun. This was my starting point from which I cycled 2. The cycleway through the park was cleaned well. The difference being that on this type of path mopeds and scooters are not allowed. Since only the roadways are cleared, the footpaths are not easy to use. Therefore, many people used the roadway to walk on. This is generally accepted. I believe that in the Netherlands we are less strict about road spaces. People are allowed to walk on them when there are no side walks such as in the historic city centres or in the countryside. But also, such as in this case, when the side walks are virtually unusable, especially with a stroller. This street has on street cycle lanes which were not completely cleared. This street is about to become a cycle street. On this picture there are many more people on bikes here than there are in cars. The street is effectively already a cycle street. People used the full width of the cleaned street for cycling. The connecting street will also become a cycle street. Here, the reconstruction is taking place, but on hold due to the snow. The cycleways in this street are already narrow under normal conditions, but with the ridges of snow, left after cleaning most of the street, they became even narrower. It was not possible to pass people and so I had to just stay behind these people even though they were going rather slow in my opinion. Just this week Utrecht published a vision for the city centre for and in that vision most of the buses in this street will be on a different route and there will be much more space for walking and cycling here. Note that it is not customary in the Netherlands to clean the bus stop platforms. In fact, snow is not cleared from pedestrian spaces at all. That is just how it is here. The short stretches of cleared pedestrian space to the right must have been cleaned by residents or shop keepers, not by the city. In , main bus routes will no longer be in this street according to the Vision for the Future by the city. This will create more space for walking and cycling. Rate this:.
