UNC Edges Out Wake Forest in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Chapel Hill, NC — October 28, 2023 — In a heart-stopping showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels narrowly defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 34-31 in overtime at Kenan Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. The game, a pivotal ACC matchup, showcased the resilience and determination of both teams, but it was UNC quarterback Drake Maye who ultimately sealed the victory with a game-winning touchdown pass in the extra period.

The Tar Heels entered the game as slight favorites, but Wake Forest, led by their dynamic quarterback Michael Kern, proved to be a formidable opponent. The Demon Deacons struck first with a 45-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter, setting the tone for a back-and-forth battle. UNC responded with a methodical drive capped by a 12-yard rushing touchdown by running back Omarion Hampton, tying the game at 7-7.

The second quarter saw both teams trading blows, with Wake Forest taking a 17-14 lead into halftime after a 33-yard field goal by kicker Matthew Dennis. The Demon Deacons extended their lead in the third quarter with a trick play—a double-reverse pass that resulted in a 28-yard touchdown, sending their fans into a frenzy.

However, the Tar Heels refused to back down. Maye, a Heisman Trophy hopeful, orchestrated a 10-play, 75-yard drive in the fourth quarter, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nate McCollum. The score tied the game at 24-24 with just under six minutes remaining. Wake Forest regained the lead with another field goal, but UNC responded with a clutch 48-yard field goal by Noah Burnette as time expired, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Wake Forest had the first possession but was held to a field goal, giving UNC a chance to win the game. Maye delivered under pressure, connecting with tight end Bryson Nesbit on a 10-yard touchdown pass to secure the victory. The Tar Heel faithful erupted in celebration as the team improved to 7-1 on the season, keeping their ACC Championship hopes alive.

'Wake Forest is a tough team, and they gave us everything we could handle,' said UNC head coach Mack Brown. 'But our guys showed a lot of heart tonight. This is the kind of win that can define a season.'

Wake Forest, now 4-4, will look to regroup as they head into a bye week. Meanwhile, UNC will prepare for a crucial road game against rival Duke next Saturday, a matchup that could have significant implications for the ACC Coastal Division standings.
