UFC Introduces New Weight Classes and Adjustments to Current Divisions

Las Vegas, NV – April 13, 2025 – The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has announced major changes to its weight class structure, introducing new divisions and adjusting existing limits in an effort to provide more competitive matchups and address long-standing concerns from fighters.

New Weight Classes Added

The UFC will officially introduce two new weight classes:

Super Lightweight (165 lbs) – Bridging the gap between Lightweight (155 lbs) and Welterweight (170 lbs), this division aims to reduce extreme weight cuts for fighters struggling with the current 15-pound jump.

Super Welterweight (175 lbs) – Positioned between Welterweight (170 lbs) and Middleweight (185 lbs), this addition provides a more gradual transition for fighters moving up or down in weight.

These changes come after years of debate among fighters, coaches, and fans regarding the large gaps between certain divisions. UFC President Dana White stated, 'This is about fighter safety and fairness. Not every athlete fits perfectly into the current structure, and these adjustments will help prevent dangerous weight cuts while keeping competition balanced.'

Adjustments to Existing Divisions

In addition to the new classes, the UFC has modified some current weight limits:

Flyweight will remain at 125 lbs (no change).

Bantamweight stays at 135 lbs.

Featherweight remains 145 lbs.

Lightweight stays 155 lbs, but some fighters may shift to 165 lbs.

Welterweight will now have a 170 lbs limit (unchanged), but the new 175 lbs division may absorb some competitors.

Middleweight remains 185 lbs.

Light Heavyweight stays at 205 lbs.

Heavyweight will now have a 265 lbs limit (previously unlimited, with a typical cap at 265 lbs).

Fighter Reactions

Reactions from UFC athletes have been mixed. Former Lightweight champion Dustin Poirier, who has long advocated for a 165-lb division, praised the move: 'This is a game-changer. Fighters won’t have to kill themselves cutting weight just to compete.'

However, some fighters, like current Welterweight champion Leon Edwards, expressed concerns about potential division dilution: 'It might spread the talent too thin. We’ll have to see how it plays out.'

What’s Next?

The UFC plans to roll out the new divisions gradually, with inaugural title fights expected by late 2025. Matchmakers are already reviewing potential contenders for the Super Lightweight and Super Welterweight belts.

With these changes, the UFC joins other organizations like ONE Championship in prioritizing fighter health while maintaining competitive balance. Fans can expect fresh rivalries and new champions as the sport continues to evolve.
