The Truist Championship Heist: Inside the $1.2 Million Golf Scam

How an elaborate con at a prestigious PGA Tour event fooled players, sponsors, and fans—until one banker noticed something off.

The Setup: A Tournament Unlike Any Other

In the spring of 2023, the PGA Tour’s Truist Championship was supposed to be a marquee event, drawing top golfers and corporate sponsors to Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club. With a $20 million purse and high-profile backing from Truist Bank, everything appeared legitimate—until the money vanished.

The Mastermind: A Fake Financier

At the center of the scam was Daniel Reeves, a smooth-talking financier who had spent years ingratiating himself in Charlotte’s business circles. Reeves claimed to represent a consortium of investors backing the tournament. He secured partnerships, hired staff, and even had players sign appearance contracts—all while funneling deposits into offshore accounts.

The Red Flags

The Phantom Wire Transfer – A week before the event, Reeves assured organizers that the prize money had been sent. But when Truist Bank’s fraud team reviewed the transaction, they found it was a fabricated SWIFT confirmation.

The Missing Sponsors – Several 'sponsors' listed on promotional materials had never heard of the event. Reeves had forged documents using real company logos.

The Golfer Who Got Suspicious – A veteran pro, wary of Reeves’ constant excuses, contacted the PGA Tour directly—only to learn no such event was officially scheduled.

The Collapse

Two days before the first tee time, Reeves disappeared. Bank records showed he had siphoned over $1.2 million in 'operational funds' to the Cayman Islands. By the time the FBI tracked him to a private airfield in Florida, he was boarding a jet under a fake passport.

The Aftermath

Reeves was arrested in Costa Rica three months later, extradited, and sentenced to 12 years for wire fraud.

Truist Bank faced scrutiny for not catching the scam earlier, though no customer funds were lost.

The PGA Tour tightened event verification, requiring direct bank guarantees for all future tournaments.
